Job Overview
The Elementary School Teacher in a Self-Contained Classroom is responsible for creating a supportive, engaging learning environment that fosters students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. The teacher must comply with all applicable Board policies, procedures and supervisory directives, and consistently meet or exceed the performance standards defined by the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System.

Essential Job Functions
Arrive at school each day at an appropriate time designated by the principal, ready and prepared to complete all assigned duties.
Develop and deliver high-quality, standards-based instruction that supports the educational goals and objectives of the school.
Complete all assigned and/or accepted extracurricular and non-instructional duties in a timely and professional manner, including:
Bus duty
Cafeteria supervision
Playground duty
Supervision of extracurricular activities (subject to licensing policy)
Service on committees
All other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent, principal, or other supervisor(s)
Participate in required staff meetings and student-related meetings, including those for students with special needs.
Prepare detailed lesson plans for all classes and duties during periods of absence; maintain emergency lesson plans.
Ensure instructional delivery that meets educational goals; prepare daily lesson plans per policy 3120 – Lesson Planning.
Respond to parent inquiries, complaints, and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
Direct complaints regarding the work environment to appropriate supervisor(s) and avoid confrontations with co-workers.
Manage students’ behavior to minimize disruption and refer students to administration for disciplinary action as necessary.
Seek clarification when unsure about requirements of any policy.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements
The job requires light physical work, including the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch, or perform repetitive motions.
Use visual acuity to prepare and analyze written or computer data.
Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts.
Operate a variety of machines, motor vehicles, hand, and job-specific equipment and tools.
Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
Observe general surroundings and activities.
Communicate by spoken word to express or exchange ideas and convey detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Safely work in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Establish positive relationships with students.
Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Perform under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
Work with both children and adults with disabilities.
Talk, i.e., express or exchange ideas by means of spoken words; hear, i.e., perceive the nature of sounds by ear.
