Middle School Physical Education Teacher (2026‑27)

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required.

North Carolina teacher certification in subject area.

At least one (1) year of teaching experience with a record of improving student achievement.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences (including colleagues, students and families).

Demonstrated professional behavior, including discretion, judgment and integrity.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education lessons.

Foster students’ knowledge of and enthusiasm for physical and health education.

Teach skills in sports, fitness, movement, rhythm, and team‑based activities.

Collaborate with teachers to integrate wellness and movement into academic instruction.

Monitor and assess student progress using formal and informal methods.

Provide timely, accurate, and actionable feedback to students.

Communicate regularly with families and stakeholders.

Ensure student safety by maintaining equipment and structured environments.

Plan and coordinate school‑wide events such as Field Day.

Support students in setting and achieving personal fitness goals while developing leadership, collaboration, and sportsmanship skills.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of current physical and health education instructional methods, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education.

Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well‑being.

Ability to organize and coordinate work.

Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and families.

Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Compensation

Based upon experience, degree/certification, NC State Salary Guide and the Union County Licensed Teacher Supplement.
