Traditional Trades Advancement Program – Rock Creek Park
American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking two members to contribute to historic preservation projects alongside Rock Creek Park staff.
The Traditional Trades Advancement Program Corps is intended for enthusiastic individuals who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of historic preservation. No education or experience in the field is necessary.

Location
Located north of the Potomac River and minutes away from downtown, Rock Creek Park (ROCR) encompasses 1,754 acres of public green space in Washington, DC. ROCR is one of the first federally managed parks in the United States and supports stewardship of public lands in the Northern portion of the D.C. area. The park offers visitors an escape from the city and opportunities to learn about thousands of years of human history at several historic sites. The park is accessible by public transit, bike, and on foot.

Position Overview
Member will perform a variety of maintenance and repair projects to include painting, graffiti removal, vegetation removal, repairing masonry surfaces, asphalt repair, etc., to support the DC Safe and Beautiful efforts. Day-to-day duties include painting posts and signs, bollards, picnic tables, large planters, light posts, signposts, curbs/wayside bases and frames, trellises, and barriers. They will clean and wax wayside panels and clean the exteriors of structures by removing graffiti and invasive plants. They will prune trees and shrubs to improve visibility and reduce hazards, address safety hazards by repairing walkways and securing railings, and perform water drainage checks. During the term, members will gain experience in preservation, restoration, stabilization, and maintenance projects at D.C.’s historic sites and resources.
This placement facilitates professional development and exposure to land management agencies, including opportunities to shadow other work groups and gain experience in different conservation fields.
Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Position Benefits
Living Allowance:
The ACE Member will contribute approximately 40 hours per week and will receive a living allowance of $720/week, dispersed bi-weekly, to offset food and incidental expenses.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority:
Members may be eligible for federal hiring authority after completing the term and 640 hours of service. If a PLC-eligible term is shorter than 16 weeks, hours may be combined with another term to meet 640 hours. PLC projects have eligibility requirements such as age (16-30, some agencies interpret up to 35 for veterans) and citizenship. Housing:
Housing is the responsibility of the member and is not provided by ACE or NPS.
Professional Development Stipend:
$1,000 of professional development funds are available for pre-approved uses.
Provided Training/Orientation:
ACE members receive position-specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, prohibited activities, and networks for support. Training includes OSHA-10 and Introduction to Preservation Horticulture.
Qualifications
Required:
U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts.
High School Diploma or GED.
Ages 18-30 (up to 35 if a U.S. veteran).
Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Current and valid form of ID (copies required at hire).
Willing to undergo and pass required criminal history checks.
Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
Bi-weekly timesheets and term evaluations; mid-term evaluation for longer terms.
Must comply with the Member Service Agreement (no prohibited activities).

Close, distance, peripheral and depth perception; focus ability.
Weight Lifting/Force Exerted:
Frequently move up to 15 lbs., may move up to 30 lbs.
Environment:
Outdoor and indoor conditions; varying weather and climates.
Noise:
Moderate to high due to power tools.
Travel:
Domestic travel may be required.
Environmental Conditions/Hazards:
May encounter extreme heat or cold, rough terrain, wetlands, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Members must work safely to protect themselves and others.
Equipment Use/Safety:
Tools are provided by the NPS. PPE will be provided by the NPS as needed. Adherence to NPS and ACE safety protocols is required.
