Parks Maintenance Technician
The City of Hillsboro is searching for someone to keep our parks and community spaces beautiful! As a Parks Maintenance Technician, you will work with a team of parks professionals to enhance the landscapes around the City. This is a great opportunity to work hands-on in the field of public service for Parks & Recreation and Parks Maintenance - where you will enhance and positively impact our diverse community's daily lives.
We are looking to fill two positions. One will work out of our Parks Maintenance facility on NE 53rd Avenue and the other will work at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex.
At our 53rd Avenue facility:
Maintain and operate close to 50 irrigation systems in parks and around facilities across Hillsboro
Perform maintenance including adjustments, repairs, and replacements of sprinklers, valves, and drip lines
Provide support to the teams that maintain the various parks and sites by making sure the irrigation systems are functioning correctly
Regular, routine irrigation system inspections
Repairing and relocating irrigation lines and zones as needed during the winter season
Pressurizing systems in the spring and making repairs as needed
Winterizing systems in the fall with an industrial size compressor
We currently have a mix of systems on Maxicom and Baseline Irrigation and are gradually switching everything to Baseline
In this role you will:
Provide direction and oversight to seasonal and part-time employees
Assist with training, task delegation, and quality control of assigned work
Demonstrate strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
Provide excellent customer service skills to the public and co-workers
At our Gordon Faber Recreation Complex Facility:
Perform field preparation and maintenance for softball and baseball fields (dragging, lining, mound/plate care, etc.)
Provide event support, including setup, teardown, and on-site troubleshooting during events
Perform janitorial services across facilities, including restrooms, dugouts, and common areas
Maintain hardscape and landscaped areas, including general groundskeeping tasks
Support overall facility readiness to ensure a safe and high-quality experience for patrons
In this role you will:
Provide direction and oversight to a crew of up to six staff, including seasonal and part-time employees
Assist with training, task delegation, and quality control of assigned work
Demonstrate strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, event-driven environment
Deliver a high level of customer service through regular interaction with user groups, tournament directors, and the public
The ideal candidate in both roles will be excited to join our Parks Maintenance team and will be motivated to learn from our experienced staff. Other important items include a background in landscape maintenance, irrigation, or sports field maintenance. The desire to work hard, learn, and to be part of a close-knit, talented team.
A CDL and Public Pesticide Applicator License are also valuable in these roles.
Employees in Parks Maintenance are essential personnel during periods of inclement weather or other emergency situations. General Statement of Duties The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform basic routine parks maintenance and/or operational activities in assigned area of responsibility. Responsibilities as assigned may include providing customer service; performing routine maintenance and repair of equipment, infrastructure, and/or related items; operating motorized vehicles and equipment; inputting data into computerized systems; and preparing logs and records. Repair safety hazards in the parks to keep park users and staff safe
Install, repair, or replace park amenities including benches, garbage cribs and other items as needed
Safely operate the spray grounds in our parks during the summer season
Install and maintain the ice rink for Winter Village each winter
Possess basic carpentry skills or to have the ability to learn these skills and the safe use of the tools required to perform this work
Acceptable Experience and Training
High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of related work experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Licensing/Certifications Depending on assignment, some positions may require:
Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.
Oregon Public Pesticide Applicators License
Certified Pool Operator (CPO Certification) May be required to hold an appropriate Commercial Driver's License based on assignment.
