BHMG Gastroenterology
The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care and clinical support within an outpatient clinic. Responsibilities include obtaining vital signs, reconciling medications, collecting patient history, and facilitating patient flow. Additional duties involve managing the electronic health record (EPIC), scheduling appointments, processing medication requests, handling prior authorizations, and coordinating tests and procedures. Upon successful completion of clinical competency, the role may also require performing EKGs, lab tests, injections, and/or phlebotomy. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential to ensure efficient patient care and support for providers. This role requires regular on-site presence to perform the essential job functions.
Responsibilities
Provide direct patient care and clinical support in an outpatient clinic.
Obtain vital signs, reconcile medications, collect patient history, and assist with patient flow.
Manage the electronic health record (EPIC), schedule appointments, process medication requests, and handle prior authorizations.
Coordinate tests and procedures; may perform EKGs, lab tests, injections, and/or phlebotomy upon completion of clinical competency.
Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills to support providers and patient care.
Maintain regular on-site presence to perform essential job functions.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or General Education Equivalency
1+ year(s) of experience as a Medical Assistant in a medical office, clinic or similar setting required. Experience must include direct, hands-on patient care in a clinical setting, such as obtaining vital signs, documenting patient history and medications, and performing clinical procedures (e.g. EKGs, phlebotomy, administering injections or vaccines).
Or Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant training program, that includes hands on patient experience as part of the curriculum, required.
Upon hire, all Medical Assistants will undergo a clinical competency assessment and must successfully complete MA orientation. Those who do not meet the required standards will be enrolled in the Medical Assistant Trainee Program for further development and evaluation.
Basic computer skills, experience with EMR System a plus.
Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire.
BAT and DOT certifications required for Medical Assistants in Occupational Medicine within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications for a Certified Medical Assistant
Current Medical Assistant Certification from AAMA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT, or AAMP.
Or graduate of an accredited LPN or RN program with current unrestricted licensure.
