Summary
The Alaska VA Healthcare System is looking to fill Advanced Medical Support Assistant positions in Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Juneau, AK and Fairbanks, AK. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. This announcement will remain open until the closing date, 5/26/2026. Candidates will be evaluated based on the cut‑off date, 4/29/2026.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)

English language proficiency

High‑school diploma, GED, or equivalent proficiency certificate

One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑5 in an advanced or complex clinical setting, including scheduling appointments across multiple clinics, coordinating services among diverse medical providers, and advanced knowledge of medical terminology and technical health‑care processes

Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures related to coordinated care delivery and patient support functions (appointment cycles, referrals, follow‑up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc.)

Advanced knowledge of medical terminology

Full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑6.

Physical requirements: This occupation is primarily sedentary; no specific physical requirements beyond normal standing or walking.

Duties

Total rewards include competitive salary, regular increases, and benefits

Provide administrative support to clinical colleagues in the care of Veterans

Determine health‑care eligibility for Veteran patients

Administer processing of Veterans for enrollment, benefits, and registration

Counsel Veterans regarding entitlement enrollment for health‑care benefits and special programs

Obtain essential information and documentation for enrollment activities

Perform scheduling functions – appointments, cancellations, rescheduling

Facilitate communication between Veterans and consult departments

Support inpatient units and wards with administrative duties during day, evening, night, and weekend shifts

Process and maintain inpatient medical records

Enter manual and electronic data; collate statistical information

Enter physician orders and consult requests

Prepare Veteran patient statistics

Provide reception to incoming and outgoing customers and communication

Utilize Microsoft Office to compile data and formulate reports

Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 08:00–16:30 (typical tour of duty)

Recruitment incentive (sign‑on bonus) and relocation incentive may be authorized

Paid Time Off: 37–50 days per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays)

Parental leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid leave after 12 months of employment (birth, adoption or foster placement)

Child‑care subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with family income below $144,000 may receive up to 25 % of eligible childcare costs, up to a monthly maximum of $416.66

Retirement benefits: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % employer contribution

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many programs transferable into retirement)

Telework: Not available; position is exempt from virtual work
