Job Summary
Assist in performing work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities; drive line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment. All duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities.

Eligibility
The selected candidate must reside within 45 minutes of the Rocky Mount Service Center (996 Old Franklin Turnpike, Rocky Mount VA 24151).

What You'll Do

Assist with assembly, installation, maintenance, removal, and inspection of underground facilities, conductors, fixtures, structures and associated equipment on de‑energized and grounded overhead and underground facilities under supervision.

Demonstrate ability to perform ground‑person duties under supervision as skill level dictates.

Assist with loading, unloading, handling, maintaining, installing and removing poles, towers and structures.

After completion of D‑100 or equivalent, operate company equipment (excluding digger/derricks and aerial lifts), climb poles, ladders and structures, and work on de‑energized conductors and equipment.

May work on conductors and equipment energized up to 260 V under direct supervision; after D‑200 accepts operation of digger/derricks and aerial devices under supervision.

After D‑300 or equivalent, test de‑energized overhead lines and equipment, and install/remove personal protective grounds under immediate supervision.

Assemble and install line material and hardware under supervision; use hand lines, tie knots, and demonstrate basic rope and rigging knowledge.

Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using proper tools, hardware and equipment.

Operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers and other sectionalizing devices after D‑200 under supervision.

Inspect and maintain tools, equipment and work area: use rubber gloves and sleeves (PIPE), insulating blankets, hoses and covers (IPE); organize, operate and stock company vehicles, equipment and tools; perform housekeeping; report irregularities.

Execute pole‑top rescue and bucket‑truck rescue processes as training completes.

Protect or control work area: set and remove barricades, flags, signs, cones and associated equipment.

Maintain accurate records and submit reports: read and record information on analog or digital kilowatt‑hour meters; complete Monthly Apprentice Cards and submit to supervision.

Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned, following guidelines for safety and development.

Supervision Types

Direct supervision – Qualified person works hands‑on with the performer.

Immediate supervision – Qualified person stands near the structure/equipment and maintains constant visual or verbal contact.

General supervision – Higher‑classification employee knowledgeable of the task but not necessarily on site.

Qualified person – Line Mechanic or Supervisor capable of performing safe and effective rescue.

What You'll Need

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: No experience required; line‑work experience or line‑school education preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license; obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal or state law before the end of the probationary period; acquire a CDL beginner’s permit within 60 days.

Must acquire necessary knowledge and skills to perform duties of Line Mechanic A and qualify through demonstration, examination or performance appraisal.

Must obtain qualifications for the next higher classification within the company’s determined timeframe or vacate the current classification.

Required minimum test results from the HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout (approximately 45 minutes). Refer to the test‑prep website.

Expect regular overtime, on‑call response, and travel—including out‑of‑town travel.

Salary & Benefits
Salary: $28.31 per hour.

Compensation range: $28.31 – $29.04 per hour.

Compensation grade: U016‑180.

Physical demand level: H – Heavy work: Exert 50–100 lbs occasionally, 25–50 lbs frequently, and greater than 10–20 lbs constantly to move objects.
