Job Title: Shipfitter

Job Description
As a Shipfitter, you will be responsible for laying out and fabricating metal structural parts, such as plates, bulkheads, foundations, and frames. You will brace them in position within the hull of a ship for welding. This role requires you to work from blueprints or templates and use various hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

Lay out and fabricate metal structural parts such as plates, bulkheads, and frames.

Position and align parts within the hull of a ship using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls.

Mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines, on metal surfaces.

Install temporary fasteners to hold parts in place for welding.

Install packing, gaskets, liners, structural accessories, and members.

Prepare molds and templates for nonstandard parts.

Tack weld clips and brackets in place prior to permanent welding.

Use shop machinery to roll, bend, flange, cut, and shape heavy metal parts.

Ensure all work meets safety and quality standards.

Maintain clean and organized work areas and properly care for all equipment and facilities.

Report any unsafe work conditions or practices to a supervisor.

Essential Skills

Experience with steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.

Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and use measuring tools such as calipers and tape measures.

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs and uses.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and maintenance instructions.

Familiarity with the metric system and ability to perform simple shop math.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

One-year related experience and/or training.

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Willingness to learn and dependable work ethic.

Ability to stand for long periods and work 40+ hours a week.

Pass substance abuse testing.

Work Environment
You will work in a shipyard environment, including locations such as BAE. If able, you may also work at HII. The role involves working aboard vessels and shipboard environments.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Chesapeake, VA.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $35.00/hr.
