Fairfax‑Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) is hiring multiple Behavioral Health Specialist II positions to support Diversion First in the Adult Detention Center. Compensation includes a $2,500 sign‑on bonus and a competitive wage and benefits package. The role is an onsite position in Fairfax ADC and involves providing behavioral health services, case management, and crisis intervention to individuals with serious mental illness, substance use, and co‑occurring disorders.

Adult Detention Center – Jail Based Clinician (Behavioral Health Specialist II)
Role Overview
The Behavioral Health Specialist II functions as a clinician on a multidisciplinary team, working with therapists, case managers, medical staff, peer support specialists, and criminal justice partners. Primary responsibilities include diagnosing, treating, and managing a diverse caseload of clients with behavioral health needs.
Responsibilities
Conduct behavioral health assessments, case management, education, supportive counseling, therapy groups, crisis intervention, and stabilization.
Develop client/family‑centered therapeutic treatment plans and implement them under clinical supervision.
Provide individual, group, and family treatment; administer medication as ordered; conduct wellness and health promotion services.
Advocate for clients, maintain cooperative relationships with community agencies, and facilitate court testimonies regarding client services.
Maintain accurate electronic health records and perform ongoing risk assessments for self‑harm or harm to others.
Collaborate with service professionals inside and outside CSB.
Provide entry, navigation, and referral services for individuals and families.
Administer behavioral health educational curricula.
Illustrative Duties
Make diagnoses using DSM, ICD, or other tools.
Maintain a diverse caseload of clients with substance use, developmental disabilities, and/or mental illnesses.
Conduct independent intakes and assessments.
Assist in modifying treatment interventions as needed.
Attend off‑site meetings and trainings, and communicate effectively in writing and orally.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of behavioral‑health service principles, evidence‑based treatment methods, and clinical terminology.
Knowledge of assessment processes, interviewing techniques, and community resources.
Ability to formulate diagnoses, develop treatment plans, perform risk assessments, manage a caseload, and establish rapport with clients.
Strong written and oral communication skills and record‑keeping abilities.
Employment Standards
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, nursing, counseling, or related field plus 1,500 hours of clinical experience.
OR bachelor’s degree plus QMHP or CSAC certification plus 1,500 hours of clinical experience.
OR master’s degree in a related field plus 500 hours of clinical experience.
Required Certificates and Licenses:
Valid driver’s license with fewer than six demerit points.
First Aid and CPR certification within 90 days and maintained.
Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) certification required within one month.
Qualified Mental Health Case Manager (QMHCM) certification required within one month.
Underfill Requirements:
The position may be filled at the level of Behavioral Health Specialist I (S22). Underfill candidates must meet the Behavioral Health Specialist II minimum qualifications within one year of the closing date (5/8/27).
Special Requirements:
Criminal background check, CPS registry check, driving records check, TB screening upon hire and annually. Ability to walk significant distances, climb stairs, and meet security procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
At least one year of community behavioral health experience.
Experience with persons facing mental health disorders, substance use disorders, or co‑occurring disorders.
Team‑oriented work, familiarity with work processes and procedures.
Master’s degree in a related field.
Licensed or license‑eligible in Virginia in one of: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner, Licensed Nurse Practitioner.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to walk significant distances, climb stairs, attend off‑site meetings, and perform duties in a secure environment. Physical ability may be adjusted with reasonable accommodations.
Selection Procedure
Panel interview and may include a practical exercise.
