Tetra Tech invites you to consider a rewarding opportunity within our geotechnical engineering operations as a Senior to Principal-Level Geotechnical Engineer. You may work from our Billings, Helena, or Missoula, MT offices, multiple Colorado offices, or the Phoenix, AZ office. Our Montana Geotechnical Group has strong longstanding relationships with government agencies, consulting engineering firms, and architects across Montana, Colorado, and the region. Projects allow you to work and travel within the Rocky Mountain region and across the United States on diverse client projects in infrastructure, environmental hazard sites, mining, and oil and gas.

Typical geotechnical projects include geologic hazard studies and mitigation, soil and rock slope stability analyses, waste containment design, horizontal directional drill (HDD) design, shallow and deep foundation design, bridge and highway corridor design, pavement section design, field instrumentation and monitoring, deep foundation load testing, and construction oversight and materials inspection.

Candidate responsibilities also include generating new work from regional or national markets, developing and implementing capture plans for targeted clients or market segments, and sustaining client satisfaction through project delivery. Experience in civil, environmental, hydrology or hydraulics, mining and mine reclamation, geohazards, dams and levees, and general construction is a plus.

Essential Job Functions

Provide leadership to sustain and facilitate growth of our geotechnical engineering practice and client accounts in Montana across the western United States.

Manage projects and staff through all stages of the project life cycle in the delivery of geotechnical field investigation and design services.

Assist in the growth of the geotechnical group regionally and in the business development of key client accounts.

Perform geotechnical analysis and prepare final engineering reports.

Perform geotechnical quality control inspection and documentation on construction projects.

Professionally interact with clients.

Strictly adhere to and promote company health and safety standards and expectations.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

BS in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical/Materials emphasis, or a related Geological Engineering degree.

Ten to twenty years or more of experience in geotechnical engineering.

PE license in MT, CO, or AZ or ability to obtain through reciprocity.

Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and other Microsoft software.

Experienced in preparation of engineering plans and specifications packages for public and private projects.

Able to perform geotechnical design analysis, calculations, and proficient with current geotechnical design software.

Familiarity with geotechnical lab testing and construction materials testing expected.

Excellent writing and speaking skills, comfortable with client communications.

Strong business development track record.

Pre‑employment drug screening required in compliance with state regulations.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Preferred Qualifications

Master of Science or PhD in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical/Materials emphasis, or a related Geological Engineering degree.

HAZWOPER and MSHA certification.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment weighing up to 50 lbs in variable weather and terrain.

Ability to walk across variable terrain, including uneven ground and steep slopes, in all weather conditions for up to 10‑14 day work stints.

Ability to travel and perform field oversight.

Office work will involve time sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.

Work Environment and Environmental Factors

This position is based out of either our Billings, Helena, or Missoula, MT office locations (preferred), with Lakewood, CO and Phoenix, AZ as secondary locations. It will have office and field responsibilities and may include a hybrid arrangement, subject to review.

Field work will be performed outdoors, exposing the employee to various environmental factors such as weather, altitude, terrain, noise, and vibration.

Office work will involve extended periods of sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer and other office equipment.

Additional Information

Full‑time, Monday through Friday work schedule (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.

Work will be performed in an office and field setting.

Target Salary Range
$125,000 to $175,000. Pay is determined based on education, relevant experience, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other job‑related factors.
