Job Overview
The Phlebotomist obtains patient blood samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture using aseptic techniques and collection skills. The individual is also responsible for performing all duties integral to the identification and preparation of specimens for assay.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Successful completion of a formal Phlebotomy program, or equivalent work experience
Computer and order entry skills
NJ Driver's License

Evening Shift
Part-Time (20 hours per week)
Essential Functions
Able to effectively demonstrate all skills and techniques required to skillfully perform venipuncture on all age groups, including vacutainer, butterfly, microtainer and blood culture collection. Can effectively obtain samples from arm veins or hand veins.
Has been certified in and is responsible for the proper technique and skills required to perform the Bleeding time Test.
Inquires if patients are on blood thinners prior to any phlebotomy procedures and instructs on the application of pressure to the venipuncture site.
Instructs the patient on how long to wear bandage and/or apply pressure after any phlebotomy procedure.
Must have excellent telephone and interpersonal skills when communicating with physicians offices, patients, and hospital personnel.
Performs all other duties as assigned or directed within scope of department needs and capabilities.
Performs all specimen collection, statusing and retrieval functions on both the Hospital and Laboratory Information systems.
Responsible for obtaining blood samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture on adults in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
Responsible for the identification of patients/specimens in compliance with all hospital and regulatory requirements.
Responsible for the instruction and orientation of all new Associates and Students, as required or requested.
Responsible for the orderly maintenance of the Phleb. Storeroom and personal Blood Draw tray.
