Bridge Inspection TEC Lead
Location: Mooresville, NC; Charlotte, NC; Raleigh, NC.
Overview
Lead the Bridge Inspection Technical Excellence Center (TEC) for the North Carolina Bridge Inspection Group. Work closely with the Bridge Inspection District Manager for Carolina to develop, win, and manage bridge inspection and repair projects for NCDOT, SCDOT, county and city authorities, and other transportation agencies.
Responsibilities
Plan, schedule, and perform bridge inspections for NCDOT, City of Charlotte, City of Raleigh, and other owners in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Bridges.
Liaise with client field/facility staff and lead communication of critical condition findings.
Direct and mentor other field team members.
Enforce safe operations in the field.
Create or assist with creating and reviewing all required inspection reports.
Ensure technical compliance with all applicable standards and specifications.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Support the Mid-Atlantic District and National Bridge Inspection Group in performing bridge, ancillary, and culvert inspections as required.
Support preparation of proposals, tasks, reports, and other documents.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution.
Professional Engineering Licensure.
10+ years of bridge inspection (NBIS) experience with NCDOT and other transportation clients.
Project Manager/Team Leader experience in NC and other states.
Successful management of bridge inspection projects for NCDOT and/or SCDOT.
Completion of the NHI Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges course.
Completion of additional NHI courses (e.g., NSTM, LRFR, Scour related).
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
High-level self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
Independent work ability with minimal oversight while providing guidance and leadership to junior team members, with strict QA/QC adherence.
Physical capability to perform continuous field work, including work at heights, climbing, carrying ladders and gear, and working in adverse weather conditions.
Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking for problem solving.
Team‑oriented work style.
Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
Ability to supervise, train, and direct the work of team members.
Awareness of time and budget management.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP's health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
Successful completion of WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in engineering.
Additional FHWA/NHI Training (e.g., 130078 Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges, 130087 Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures).
Experience inspecting railroad and complex bridges, tunnels, and ancillary structures.
Familiarity with or certifications in various NDT techniques and UAS applications.
Familiarity with rope‑access techniques and/or UAS operations certifications.
