Job Overview
Riverside University Health System (RUHS) - Medical Center is hiring Nursing Assistants (Regular and Per Diem) to join our care teams across multiple divisions throughout Riverside County.

Under supervision, assistants professionals nursing personnel or other professional healthcare providers in providing basic patient care and treatment; observe patients via video monitoring equipment from a remote location; perform nonprofessional nursing duties in the care of physically and mentally ill patients; perform other related duties as required.

The Nursing Assistant is an entry‑level classification and typically reports to appropriate supervisory or management level nursing staff. Incumbents may be assigned to any outpatient clinic or inpatient nursing unit across the RUHS or within the Department of Public Health.

The most competitive candidate acquires a Nursing Assistant Certification and has at least one year of experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, or acute care setting. The position requires prolonged standing and walking, frequent bending and stooping, and assisting patients with activities of daily living. The role involves lifting and repositioning patients up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance, and safely performing approved de‑escalation and crisis intervention techniques, including physical interventions when necessary.

At the Arlington Campus, this role includes supporting patients with daily‑living activities, assisting physicians and licensed healthcare providers with patient care tasks, and providing in‑person verbal redirection to individuals exhibiting at‑risk behaviors. Staff may accompany mental health patients to therapy sessions, court appearances, and various social or recreational activities. Responsibilities also include safely assisting with patient transfers, offering hands‑on mobility support, and responding promptly when patients do not respond to verbal cues or require additional assistance.

Responsibilities

Provide basic bedside nursing care to assure comfort and cleanliness of patients; take and record temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; bathe, shave, feed, and dress patients and assist those capable of self‑care.

Collect, test and record results of routine specimen examinations; provide patients with bedpans, remove and clean them, and record intake and output of patients.

May assist in the administration of such treatments as suctions, soaks and enemas; give and empty sitz baths; assist doctors or professional healthcare providers with IVs, pelvic exams, spinal taps, or other medical procedures.

Assist patients in getting into and out of bed and wheelchairs; lift or assist in lifting, restraining and positioning patients; may set up fracture equipment and assist doctors in applying casts and braces.

Clean and sterilize instruments, dressings, supplies, and utensils; transport patients to and from units.

Maintain renal dialysis equipment; prepare and transport bodies to morgue; may clean restrooms; set up oral hygiene trays.

Observe and report unusual behavior of patients through Unit chain of command; may accompany and attend mental patients in therapy sessions, court appearances or daily living routines, including social and recreational activities.

May provide patient transportation in the absence of Medical Transportation Technician; assist in admission and discharge of patients from unit; go on ambulance runs as necessary.

Monitor patients using AvaSys Telesitter Solution software and monitoring equipment.

Verbally redirect patients via a 2‑way radio from engaging in at‑risk behaviors; summon nursing staff if a patient requires assistance, nonresponsive to verbal commands, or can no longer be viewed on the video monitor.

Work Schedule

Regular full‑time and per‑diem shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Shift times subject to operational needs; schedule discussion during interview.

Salary and Compensation

Regular Full‑time Rates:

$20.71–$27.60 hourly; $3,589.73–$4,783.33 monthly; $43,076.80–$57,399.93 annually.

Regular‑Fulltime Nursing Assistant Differentials:

Evening shift (3 p‑11:30 p): $0.60 per hour worked between the hours; Night shift (11 p‑7:30 a): $1.20 per hour worked between the hours.

Per‑Diem Rate:

$27.60 hourly; $4,783.33 monthly; $57,399.93 annually.

Per‑Diem Nursing Assistant Differentials:

Evening shift (3 p‑11:30 p): $0.35 per hour worked between the hours; Night shift (11:30 p‑7 a): $0.75 per hour worked between the hours.

Education and Certifications

Successful completion of the education required by the State of California to obtain the necessary valid certifications.

Licensing and Certifications

Valid Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) issued by the State of California.

Valid Paramedic license issued by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority.

Valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification approved by the State of California.

Knowledge of: principles, methods, and techniques of basic patient care and safety; patient vital signs and basic medical terminology; video monitoring equipment and software; safe patient handling techniques, including lifting, positioning, and transfer methods.

Knowledge and Abilities

Read, write, and speak the English language.

Learn the principles, methods and procedures of basic patient care; learn hospital routines and techniques.

Monitor and alert nursing staff when a patient becomes a danger to themselves.

Perform bedside nursing care in an understanding and sympathetic manner.

Communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset; follow oral and written directions.

Use a computer, 2‑way radio, mobile phone, and video monitoring equipment; maintain simple records.

Apply proper body mechanics in lifting and moving patients.

Other Requirements

Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association is required.

Current CNA Certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Copies of Nursing Assistant Certification and AHA BLS card must be uploaded to your profile as an attachment at the time of submitting your application to be considered.

Pre‑Employment Requirements
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre‑employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting. A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from County employment.

Probationary Period
As an approved local merit system, all County of Riverside employees, except those serving "At Will," are subject to the probationary period provisions as specified in the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, County Resolution, or Salary Ordinance. Temporary and Per‑Diem employees serve at the pleasure of the agency/department head.
