
Nurse Midwife - BWH

The Nurse Midwife is a professional authorized by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice Nurse Midwifery. Advanced education has prepared him/her to assume management responsibility of a caseload of obstetrical and gynecological patients. The Nurse Midwife provides obstetrical care to patients, which includes physical assessment, patient education, nursing care and management of problems in accordance with approved nurse midwifery guidelines. The staff nurse midwife is responsible to the Program Director, certified Nurse Midwives and/or the Executive Director of Women’s and Newborn Health.

Responsibilities
Assumes management responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for a plan of care for obstetrical and gynecological patients selected according to approved nurse midwifery guidelines.
Collaborates with the health care team in planning and implementing patient care for obstetrical and gynecological health needs.
Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principles of growth and development with newborn, adolescent and adult patient populations.
Assist in the development, implementation and revision of nurse midwifery guidelines and standards of care.
Evaluate individual health care status of patients, formulate a management plan and revise the plan as indicated.
Participate in continuous case review and appropriately communicate current data regarding all patients cared for by the nurse midwifery practice.
Issue prescriptions and medication orders in accordance with BWH nurse Midwifery practice protocols, and the rules set forth by the Board of Nursing.
Document in a clear, complete, concise and organized manner demonstrating skill in the nursing process.
Seek consultation according to nurse midwifery protocols from all members of the health care team involved in patient’s care and make appropriate referrals.
Provide consultation services as required by the health care team.
Complete history and physical examinations and laboratory tests as appropriate.
Continue assessment and teaching throughout pregnancy as indicated by documentation.
Manage normal labor and conduct delivery, including assessment of maternal and fetal status, identification of deviations from normal, management of third stage, management of episiotomy and peripheral repairs.
Manage maternal postpartum course including teaching, referrals, and follow‑up.
Provide 24‑hour on‑call coverage to a caseload of obstetrical patients, including telephone triage.
Identify, manage and consult for obstetrical emergencies as indicated.
Participate in ongoing review of nurse midwifery prescriptive practice.
Participate in the Quality Management Program on a regular and continuing basis.
Demonstrate appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers within the institution and community.
Demonstrate awareness of community resources and assist staff, patients and families to use them effectively.
Serve on nursing and hospital committees and assume responsibility for disseminating and communicating information to staff.
Participate in cost‑effective management of personnel, time, supplies and equipment in their area.
Participate in the selection process of new employees.
Participate in peer evaluation of other team members.
Participate in the orientation of new employees.
Act as a preceptor for members of the staff and students.
Present divisional and organizational continuing education programs.
Identify own learning needs and update clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.
Develop annual objectives and review them with the Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Director at time of the performance review and at appropriate intervals.
Complete the annual credentialing process through the Nursing Department's credentialing program.
Educate lay and/or professional groups through lectures, papers, publications, and educational materials.
Assist in determining, evaluating, and/or implementing nurse midwifery practice goals and objectives.
Maintain an interdisciplinary approach for planning and communicating information for appropriate patient care.
Maintain awareness of legislation that may affect the health care delivery systems and nurse midwifery practice.
Initiate or participate in nursing research at a level consistent with educational background and experience.
Maintain understanding of current research in related clinical areas through relevant publications.
Contribute by either group or individual authorship to writing for publication.
Recommend innovative approaches to nurse midwifery practice based on selected research findings.
Education
Certificate/Diploma Midwifery required.
Master’s Degree in Nursing or Public Health required.
Licenses and Credentials
Midwife, Certified Nurse [State License] - Generic - HR Only required.
Experience
Previous nurse midwifery experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates clinical expertise to function in an independent role.
Excellent interpersonal relationships and communication skills in order to collaborate with patients, families and staff.
Ability to work with frequent stress resulting from an active caseload, busy clinical settings and 24‑hour on‑call coverage.
Ability to be self‑directive and demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities of position.
