Overview
This position, employed by PAGNY for The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H), delivers medical, mental health, and discharge planning care to the NYC jail system. The role contributes to a comprehensive, evidence‑based therapeutic program that serves a diverse population, including serious mental illness and other mental health challenges.
Responsibilities
Orient patients to unit policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and routine schedule.
Implement crisis and de‑escalation interventions when patient behavior requires such support.
Identify patient characteristics and environmental triggers that may incite agitated behaviors and communicate findings to the treatment team.
Perform patient checks and rounds as required.
Communicate clinical matters to assigned mental health or DOC staff, reporting any unusual findings or changes.
Escort patients to groups or other required locations.
Conduct 1:1 monitoring of patients for behavioral management and modification purposes.
Participate in departmental clinical training as required.
Lead or co‑lead groups/activities such as anger management techniques, documenting activities thereafter.
Respond appropriately to patient emergencies and cooperate with DOC staff to support unit safety.
Participate in scheduled in‑person 1:1 supervision with the MHTA supervisor or designee.
Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Perform additional mental health duties as directed by team leaders or supervisors.
Interface with DOC Staff
Engage DOC staff during incidents of violence, contraband discovery, or suspicion thereof.
Debrief DOC custodial staff prior to each tour regarding problematic patients or issues.
Assume a secondary role in resolving emergencies when officers arrive on the unit.
Qualifications
Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Services, or a health‑related area; or
High school diploma or GED plus two years of full‑time experience in Nursing Behavioral Health or a related field.
Combination of the above acceptable.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to establish successful interpersonal relationships with patients and coworkers.
