Job Description
The registered professional nurse is responsible for utilizing job skills to effectively carry out the nursing process: including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, evaluation, documentation and time management. They are responsible for quality communication, teamwork and leadership/professionalism. Also directs, coordinates and implements patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
A Registered Nurse Per Diem (RN PD) is responsible for the care of the population they are assigned and must complete yearly mandatory competencies, any unit‑specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee as well as Professional Practice Ladder requirements such as assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, PI Activity and department initiatives, communicating and sharing information with Director/Designee and co‑workers from unit or hospital committee, and reporting on Valley Health paid Education, Seminar/Conference, workshop or Nursing Article. Portfolios must be current and submitted to Director/Designee annually by March 1st. They routinely solicit and validate patient/family satisfaction, participate in peer review for the unit and develop a bulletin board or poster that provides educational information to staff/patients/family members.

Education
Associates Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN or ADN) is required.
Bachelor's Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
Experience
Two years of RN experience is required.
Certification & Licensures
RN License is required. Must be licensed or eligible to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia, either via a multi‑state license or a single‑state license in Virginia.
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) – American Heart “Healthcare Provider” (HCP) – AHA approved is required. New hires must have the American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
Relevant Specialty Certification is preferred.
Qualifications
Competent in providing care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological stages of human growth and development.
Competent to provide care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
Must have a reliable means of phone communication with the hospital.
If an RN beginning employment as an RN I or promoting to an RN I from any VH position, must secure an Eligibility to Test Letter (or an interim phone primary source verification and documentation of the same) from the Virginia Board of Nursing if a Virginia resident or non‑compact state resident. (If resides in a Compact state other than Virginia, cannot commence employment as an RN A; must first secure home state’s Compact license with multi‑state privileges and may then commence RN employment as an RN I.)
