Summary
The Emergency Department - Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education – self‑management – and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
Qualifications
English Language Proficiency – must be proficient in basic written and spoken English to serve in direct patient care positions (38 U.S.C. 7403(f)).
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE).
Or individuals attending a master’s level bridge program in nursing with coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s level degree may seek registration as a registered nurse before completion.
Upon achieving a state license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion of the bridge program.
Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing with a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration meet the requirement for appointment.
Foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree requires formal degree equivalency validation from an accepted equivalency evaluation (e.g., ICD).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth.
Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) exception – candidates who meet basic education but not licensure may be appointed at entry level with a temporary appointment while pursuing licensure.

Education and experience requirements by level (Nurse I Level I – ADN or Diploma; Level II – ADN/Diploma with 1 year of specialized experience or BSN; Level III – same with additional experience; Nurse II – BSN or MSN with experience; Nurse III – MSN or Doctoral with advanced experience).
Preferred experience: belt/systems redesign training or certification; SNT/GNT/RNTTP completion

CTVHCS is making a cultural change from a disease‑focused approach to a health and wellbeing approach as part of the Whole Health System of Care.
This is a VA‑wide initiative to provide a comprehensive and systematic approach to improve healthcare delivery at all stages of Veteran care.
The entire staff will participate, shifting focus from “What’s the matter with you?” to “What matters to you – and how can we help you live your best life?” and integrating conventional and complementary health approaches.
The Emergency Department - Registered Nurse duties and responsibilities include providing competent, evidence‑based care, delegating and supervising basic nursing care, directing nursing education, providing urgent and emergent care, serving as direct care provider, educator, administrator, researcher, consultant, leader, and advocate.
Evaluates practice continuously based on best evidence, provides constructive feedback, fosters a safe and supportive environment, contributes nursing perspective, partners with others to effect change, supports colleagues, shares educational findings, questions clinical practices, participates in evidence‑based‑practice culture, and remains responsible for all elements of the nursing process.
Assesses patients by collecting pertinent data, triaging using the five‑level triage system, determining diagnoses, developing individualized plans, and identifying expected outcomes.
