Special Heavy Motor Equipment Operator
This position involves operating specialized heavy motor equipment on an assigned basis, ensuring safe and efficient operation of complex machinery such as dump trucks, backhoes, rollers, loaders, and graders. The operator must comply with all Massachusetts and Department of Transportation rules and regulations and work under general supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operate and maintain dump trucks, backhoes, rollers, loaders, graders, and other DPW specialty equipment.
Undertake general labor in conjunction with assigned duties directed by highway and sewer supervisors.
Service equipment with fuel, oil, or coolants and perform minor adjustments and repairs.
Conduct required vehicle or equipment safety checks.
Maintain operating and maintenance logs for vehicles and equipment.
Perform manual labor tasks as required.
Assist with other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Valid CDL Class A license, 2A, or 1C hoisting license (or ability to obtain necessary licenses within six months of hire).
Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
Two years of related paid full‑time work experience.
Skills and Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of hazardous and safety precautions in operating this class of equipment.
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
Capability to follow oral and written technical instructions.
Professional aptitude for working courteously and harmoniously with co‑employees, supervisors, and the public.
Demonstrated skill in operating backhoes and loaders used in road maintenance and repair.
Proficiency in using equipment and tools.
Physical, Motor, and Visual Skills
Significant portion of work involves standing, bending, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects up to approximately 50 lbs.
Work performed 95% of the time outdoors in varying temperatures.
Visual demands include reading documents and operating motor vehicles and other equipment.
