The Role
Shipfitter (Boilermaker) is first assigned to the Welding School for instruction in shielded metal arc tacking. After qualifying, the student begins a curriculum‑based rotation through various production areas to hone skill. The Boilermaker program is a 3‑year program designed to provide the essential foundation for several courses which include Blueprint reading, Mathematics, Modern Steel Shipbuilding, General Shipfitting Practices, Fundamentals of Drafting and Structural Quality. Students engage in various methods of cutting, heating and burning as it applies to hand‑held torches as well as automated cutting, heating, cutting and beveling processes. Safe operating procedures are emphasized as students learn to cut and shape steel plating and layout using mathematical functions. Students also identify and use various measuring devices in metric and standard format as it relates to the ship’s frame, hull and superstructure. Students also learn Shipyard terminology, related tools, equipment and processes to perform the basic tasks while building their knowledge of Ingalls Shipyard Industry.

Must Have
Must be a high school graduate or have completed your GED. Must provide the following information at final interview: high school or GED transcript (not your diploma), driver’s license or state ID, DD214 if former military.
