
Senior Tunnel Engineer / Geologist - Kensico, NY

Brief Description
LJB Engineering Company, a national engineering consulting firm, is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time onsite role in Kensico, NY. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience working on geotechnical, underground, tunnel projects with direct experience in mapping and surveying rock shafts and tunnels, and interpersonal skills to positively impact our firm and its clients.
Compensation
$130,000 – 170,000 based on experience, certifications, and regional market standards.
Essential Functions
Provide geologic oversight and interpretation for subsurface construction, including:
Bedrock mapping and soil overburden characterization
Rock mass classification
Mapping and laser scanning of faults, fractures, joints, and shear zones
Groundwater conditions and hydrogeology
Support tunnel, shaft, and underground structure design by interpreting geologic and geotechnical data and identifying geologic risks that may impact constructability, safety, and cost.
Review, interpret, and prepare:
Geologic logs and cross sections
Subsurface investigation reports
Geologic memoranda and technical summaries
Input for geotechnical baseline reports (GBRs), if applicable
Collaborate closely with geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, construction managers, and inspectors to integrate geologic findings into design and construction decisions.
Provide construction‑phase geologic support, which may include:
Observing and documenting exposed bedrock during excavation
Verifying geologic conditions against design assumptions
Recommending adjustments to support systems or excavation methods based on observed conditions
Evaluating groundwater impacts, seepage conditions, and potential inflow risks; coordinating with hydrogeologic analyses and mitigation strategies
Supporting other site operations as needed
Participate in risk identification and risk management, including contributing to hazard analyses related to tunneling, shafts, and subsurface infrastructure.
Ensure compliance with applicable requirements of state agencies and other stakeholders.
Prepare and review technical documentation for regulatory submissions, design reviews, and stakeholder coordination.
Provide technical input during design reviews, coordination meetings, and construction meetings with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
Field‑based assignments will require weekday, night, and weekend work. Office‑based assignments will follow standard weekday business hours.
Education and Credentials
Bachelor’s degree in geological, geotechnical, or related field required; master’s degree preferred.
Professional Geologist license in the state of New York required.
Qualifications
10+ years of relevant experience.
Excellent problem‑solving, decision‑making, and teamwork skills.
Excellent technical writing skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills and thorough knowledge of relevant technical codes, operations, processes, and trends.
Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors, and clients.
Ability to work independently, exercise independent judgment, collaborate across disciplines, and mentor junior staff.
