
Sterile Processing Instrument Specialist

Responsibilities
The Sterile Processing Instrument Specialist follows robust processes in decontamination, processing, and sterilization of instruments and equipment. They inspect, function test, and assemble items for high-level disinfection or sterilization, maintain documentation on written logs and computer systems, prioritize instrumentation for processing, answer telephones, dispatch instrumentation, equipment and supplies, and perform duties consistent with Mercy's mission, values and service standards.
Position Details
Education: High school graduate or equivalent
Experience: Minimum 12 months experience in sterile processing or 800 hours of hands‑on experience
Certifications: Maintain CRCST or CSPDT certification through HSPA or CBSPD by completing the annual required CEUs. (Recommendation: obtain additional certifications such as CIS, CER, or CHL.)
Other: PROF062 - Preceptor Workshop Pre-course Curriculum (External new hires - completion within 6 months of hire)
Basic computer skills
Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
Must interact with staff and co‑workers across a diverse range of disciplines
Must follow directions
Must operate equipment
Physical Demands
Frequent: High/mid/low level lift of items weighing around 25 pounds
Frequent: Hand coordination
Additional Responsibilities
The position may also be required to complete orthopedic technician duties, including placing patients in traction, ordering and charging bariatric supplies and rental beds, and issuing wound vacs.
