Job Description
We have multiple openings for Fabrication Technician Specialists. You will provide field leadership and guidance in support of the National Ignition Facility (NIF), the world’s largest and most energetic laser. You will support electrical and electronic fabrication, assembly, test, installation, activation, and maintenance for NIF diagnostic, instrumentation, control, and safety systems. Additional responsibilities may include testing, characterization, and documentation support. You will interact with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. This position requires full‑time on‑site presence due to the nature of the work.
In this role, you will
Provide advanced support for electronic fabrication, testing, installation, documentation, and maintenance activities supporting NIF control systems hardware.
Support advanced fabrication and repair of complex electrical and electronic hardware, including cables, connectors, chassis, printed wiring boards, and electromechanical assemblies.
May mentor and guide junior Fabrication Technicians while promoting standard NIF fabrication processes and quality workmanship.
Independent interactions with engineers to obtain clarification, resolve documentation gaps, and provide feedback on technical inconsistencies.
Prepare work packages based on engineering job requests and support execution of assigned field activities.
Utilize standard fabrication tools and industry techniques, including electrostatic discharge controls, to safely perform technical work.
Perform equipment testing, collect data, and apply knowledge of complex electrical and electronic systems to support operations.
Read and interpret electrical diagrams, schematics, cable plant documentation, and layout drawings.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q‑level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
Associate degree in Electronics Technology or related technology, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Advanced knowledge in interpreting verbal and written instructions, sketches, drawings, prints, and electronic schematics.
Advanced technical skills and knowledge of cable and chassis fabrication technology, standards, and repair methods.
Advanced experience working independently and under minimal supervision on complex technical tasks and making functional decisions on technical problems.
Advanced experience working in customer service or field support environment, providing responsive support and resolving issues efficiently.
Advanced knowledge of large and complex electrical and electronic systems, including instrumentation, data acquisition, control, feedback, and interlock systems.
Effective written, verbal, feedback, interpersonal, and presentation communication skills.
Advanced knowledge of electrical safety practices and diagnostic instrumentation.
Qualifications We Desire
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience providing technical guidance or mentorship to technicians or support staff.
Advanced knowledge of electrical and electronic fabrication, installation, and troubleshooting.
Pay Range
Salary ranges from $52.23 to $63.97 per hour, based on factors such as specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
