About the Role
McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP, a Chicago-based, full-service intellectual property law firm, is seeking an Accounting Specialist. This person will work closely with our accounting team (accounting manager, legal billers, and finance Partner) to help streamline our internal financial operations, allowing our practitioners to remain focused on delivering industry-leading service to our clients.
For this role, you will be working full-time primarily out of our downtown Chicago office.
Essential Job Functions
Revenue Account Resolution:
Proactively engage with billing partners and clients to facilitate the timely resolution of outstanding balances, ensuring a seamless and professional financial experience. Experience with Elite 3E, specifically the collection module, is a plus.
Payment Application:
Process and record incoming client payments (checks, wires, and ACH) to the appropriate matters, ensuring high attention to detail and ledger accuracy.
Month-End and Year-End Support:
Assist the accounting team with basic journal entries, data verification, and the gathering of supporting documentation for the month-end and year-end closing process.
General Ledger Maintenance:
Assist in the preparation of journal entries and perform monthly bank reconciliations to ensure the integrity of the firm’s financial records.
General Financial Administration:
Maintain organized digital financial files and provide general operational support to the Accounting Manager to ensure the smooth daily functioning of the department.
Required Knowledge/Skills
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
Technically savvy with a demonstrated ability to learn and develop expertise in various software-based systems and tools. Experience with Elite 3E is a plus
Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly in Excel
Proficiency with Microsoft Forms and Teams is a plus but not required
Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently based on competing deadlines, and to manage a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a clear, organized, and to-the-point manner, and with a positive tone.
Works well independently, takes ownership of projects, and takes initiative to proactively identify and help solve problems with a focus on moving projects to completion.
Eager to learn, motivated, and excited to be working as a team with practitioners and our administrative staff to advance the firm’s primary goal of providing industry leading service to our clients.
Flexibility with work hours and/or overtime as needed.
