Summary
The Electrician is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - Washington DC VA Medical Center (WAS DC VAMC) - in the Facilities Management Services Electrical Section. Primary duties include installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of the electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment in the industrial, institutional, office, and residential buildings that make up the electrical and lighting distribution.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Experience of a specific length of training is not required, but applicants must provide evidence of training or experience that demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position. This evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions in the resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element; those who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating.

Duties

The Electrician will maintain electrical systems at the various facility locations and must obtain and maintain a current driver's license.

Install, modify, or remove all aspects of an electrical system at 120 volts or less, 600 volts or less, and 12–470 volts or less.

Install, modify, or remove secondary emergency power distribution centers throughout the utility power distribution system.

Maintain all normal power branch circuits and emergency power branch circuits, including all related branch equipment, to ensure proper hospital and research laboratory operation.

Maintain the emergency power distribution system which includes two 1500 kW diesel generators that provide three‑phase primary utility power to the entire facility (12–470 volts) and all related secondary emergency power distribution centers.

Install, repair, troubleshoot, test, and modify new and existing electrical distribution systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment located in research laboratories, the main hospital, and other campus buildings.

Demonstrate mastery of cutting, threading, bending, and installing rigid pipe and all other required conduit systems and related raceway systems.

Pull conductors through raceway systems and properly phase cables and make connections, sometimes when voltage is present.

In emergency conditions, splice high‑voltage cables.

Maintain electric and electronic control circuits on various equipment including medical gas systems, vertical transportation power distribution systems, motor control centers, digital master controls, load centers, and uninterruptible power systems.

Select proper wire gauges, insulation, protective devices, and switching for a variety of equipment, lighting, and miscellaneous electrical loads.

Demonstrate mastery of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment required for the performance of work.

Operate power hydraulic work platforms safely.

Produce or modify as‑built drawings that delineate system alterations, working with engineers, project managers, CAD operators, and supervisors.

Maintain an evolving shop inventory of electrical supplies sufficient to keep research laboratories and the hospital campus operational.

Work under hazardous conditions, including high voltages, electrical shock hazards, live circuits, confined spaces, unconditioned and cramped spaces, outdoors, and on rooftops or other high places that may require lifts, extension ladders, or scaffolding.

Wear personal protective equipment and apply Lock‑out/Tag‑out procedures as outlined in NFPA 70E.

Prevent infection and contagious disease exposure by working on wards, laboratories, and throughout the medical center.

Exercise normal care and practice all safety regulations while performing duties.

Make independent decisions on equipment shutdown when a supervisor is not available.

Work Monday‑Friday, 7:00 am–3:30 pm.

Lift from 10 to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally handle objects weighing more than 50–150 pounds, using appropriate lifting measures.

Work for prolonged periods while kneeling, crouching, stooping, standing in awkward positions, and climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, hydraulic or aerial lifts, and roofs.
