R&D Engineer
Keysight Technologies, Calabasas, CA, United States
Responsibilities
We are seeking a highly skilled R&D Engineer to drive the development of next‑generation layout automation technologies for RFIC, RF module, and microwave designs within Keysight's EDA ecosystem. This role focuses on parameterized cell (PCell) development, Python‑based layout automation, EM‑aware design flows, and engineering support for high‑frequency components including power amplifiers, mixers, filters, and passive structures.
The ideal candidate will combine strong RFIC/microwave design fundamentals with deep hands‑on experience in layout generation, parameterization, and EDA automation. This is a high‑impact individual contributor role, delivering core layout technology that powers ADS and Keysight's broader design platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Develop advanced PCells, Python‑based cells, and Python‑driven layout templates for RFIC, MMIC, and high‑frequency passive/active components.
Build EM‑optimized geometry generators incorporating constraints such as symmetry, spacing rules, routing patterns, stackup effects, and foundry DRC.
Create reusable, scalable layout modules supporting inductors, transmission lines, transformers, filters, couplers, matching networks, and PA structures.
Develop automation flows for layout synthesis, parameter sweeps, geometry optimization, and rule‑driven layout adaptation.
Implement layout‑to‑EM extraction flows enabling high‑accuracy simulation of parameterized geometries.
Contribute domain expertise in RFIC and RF module design, including linear and nonlinear circuits, matching networks, filters, oscillators, PAs, and mixers.
Collaborate with software, EM, layout, and workflow teams to integrate new automation capabilities into Keysight's design platforms.
Contribute to integration of ML‑based optimization or geometry synthesis techniques.
Deliver high‑quality code, documentation, tests, and validation artifacts as part of an engineering development cycle.
Collaborate cross‑functionally with RF designers, system architects, EDA developers, and test teams.
Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, workflow design, and internal technical discussions.
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF/Microwave Engineering, Electronics, or related field.
Strong foundation in RFIC/microwave circuit design, EM simulation, and layout principles.
Hands‑on experience with ADS, HFSS, AWR, Cadence Virtuoso, or similar EDA tools.
Proficiency in Python for automation, PCell development, and EDA scripting.
Strong understanding of high‑frequency component layout including PAs, mixers, filters, LNAs, and passive structures.
Experience with EM extraction, layout‑driven optimization, and parameterized designs.
Ability to deliver clean, maintainable code using CI/CD, version control, and modular software practices.
Preferred Skills
Experience with PCells (SKILL, Python, ADS, internal DSLs) and automated layout generation.
Knowledge of performance optimization, DRC handling, stackup‑driven layout, and EM‑aware geometry construction.
Experience with AI/ML for design automation, optimization, or sensitivity modeling.
Background in high‑linearity, low‑noise, wideband RF design.
Exposure to cloud‑based simulation or modern scalable EDA workflows.
Strong analytical problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently as a key technical contributor.
Other Requirements
Any use of AI assistance used by applicants during interviews will result in immediate disqualification for this position.
