Position Summary
Laboratory Assistant position to assist lab staff with day‑to‑day operations of the laboratory, providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support including specimen management/processing, ordering and receipt of inventory, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers and other laboratories.
Job Responsibilities
Maintain an adequate supply of all general laboratory items and department specific reagents/materials needed for specimen analysis.
Communicate need for additional supplies to supervisor/manager when necessary.
Ensure proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials; document receipts according to NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
Understand specimen requirements; communicate to provider and document when samples are cancelled or rejected.
Assure specimen quality prior to processing.
Call provider to confirm or clarify requests, modify and place orders as required.
Front‑end processing of all samples, preparing them for analysis (labeling, centrifuging, aliquotting, transport, placing on automated test platforms).
Back‑end processing of samples, including preparation for storage, tracking, and eventual disposal according to policy.
Properly dispose of all department regulated medical, biological, chemical and clean waste.
Clean all laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment in accordance with laboratory protocols and documented as required.
Maintain logs for temperature and humidity for assigned equipment, work areas and eye wash stations.
Complete add‑on requests as per policy, including retrieval of add‑on specimens from within and outside the department.
Review routine and stat pending lists and retrieve missed tests/specimens.
Answer the phone and provide assistance to callers as required (spec requirements, test availability, TAT, etc.).
Access automated test platforms to assess status of test samples.
Ship blood and body fluids to other sites.
Assist in blood product modification (irradiation, thawing of frozen products).
Inventory manage blood products: receiving, stocking, expiration.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
Laboratory experience, including handling open containers of blood and body fluid (accessioning/in intake not included).
Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word.
Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
1+ years experience in a laboratory setting as a laboratory assistant.
Excellent written and verbal communication with all levels of organization.
Salary
The salary range for this role is $56,517.02 – $61,936.47 annually. Actual salaries depend on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
