Overview
Under general supervision, performs unskilled and semi‑skilled work in the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Employees operate manual and power tools, carry out routine and repetitive tasks without close supervision, and are expected to follow specific work instructions. Assignments may involve exposure to inclement weather, hazardous work environments, and the use of specialized protective clothing.
Physical Demands & Special Requirements
Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs and perform strenuous labor under adverse conditions. Employees are considered emergency personnel and may be required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Personal protective equipment must be worn as required.
Job Specific Information
A written and/or hands‑on assessment may be given. Must have a valid Maryland driver’s license and obtain a CDL within 6 months of starting. Responsibilities & Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Complete the MCPS General Maintenance Worker written and hands‑on skills test at the required minimum score.
Follow safe work practices and procedures used in maintenance work.
Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections of commercial trucks and equipment.
Carry out skilled maintenance tasks such as asphalt, concrete, power equipment operation, fencing, snow removal, landscaping, graffiti removal, and county recycling program activities.
Operate commercial trucks with trailers to move large equipment site‑to‑site.
Follow oral and written instructions, read and complete basic written reports and work orders.
Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, including in adverse conditions.
Operate hand and power tools, power mowers, tractors, and light trucks.
Meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education & Experience
Completion of a ninth‑grade education required; additional education desirable.
In‑service training courses or equivalent completion.
Documented experience in building maintenance and general construction/maintenance work.
Possession of a valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license. Ability to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B within 6 months of starting date.
