Job Description

The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for performing echocardiographic techniques and procedures that assist physicians in diagnosing medical conditions in patients.

Responsibilities and Duties

Obtains diagnostic echocardiographic recordings or images following established procedures, including: echocardiography with echo contrast for difficult images, cardiac ultrasound, and stress echocardiography with stress monitoring, pre‑ and post‑exercise images, and digital image processing for physician review.
Explains the procedure to patients and provides necessary instructions. Prepares patients for the procedure by taking vital signs, attaching monitoring equipment, and setting up diagnostic equipment. Reviews the patient record to confirm test indication, clinical information, and order verification before initiating the test. Collects relevant information such as diagnosis, history, physical, height/weight, EKG, and lab data, and documents findings using patient interview, auscultation, and palpation.
Recognizes and corrects technical problems with technique or equipment that may affect results, identifying abnormal pathology or abnormalities that may require additional testing or immediate reporting to the requesting physician. Refers any questions regarding therapy or testing to the Lead Cardiac Sonographer or the requesting physician. Completes documentation for proper charging and recording of the test.
Maintains supplies and equipment per established procedures, including cleaning and scheduled maintenance. Assists with new procedures introduced by new technology and studies suggested reference material for new procedures.
Education

Graduate of a 2–4‑year Allied Health training program required.
Experience

Two (2) years of training experience in cardiac sonography (echocardiography) preferred. Recent graduates of accredited sonography programs are encouraged to apply.
Certification & Licensure

Requires registry by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or Advanced Cardiac Sonographer (ACS).
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support)—American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP)—AHA approved required. New hires must hold appropriate American Heart Association (AHA) certification prior to completion of orientation.
Qualifications

Must possess the physical, mental, and technical skills necessary to perform diagnostic testing of adult cardiovascular patients.
Ability to communicate professionally with physicians, peers, and patients on a technical level.
