Clinical Laboratory Assistant II, Outreach

Assists medical laboratory scientists under direct supervision by performing routine laboratory support duties and approved testing in one of various specialized laboratories throughout UMMS, following departmental procedures and regulations stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.
Key Responsibilities

Receives and accession patient samples into the Laboratory Information System, ensuring accurate and timely entry of all codes and information; maintains accurate patient identification and billing information.
Processes specimens (centrifugation, aliquoting, and other special handling) and delivers them to specific laboratories as required; preserves specimens in appropriate storage conditions (refrigerator, freezer, incubator, dry ice, etc.).
Identifies and resolves specimen integrity issues such as mislabeled specimens, quantity not sufficient (QNS), incorrect container type, or incomplete requisitions, and documents all information for quality assurance.
Processes add‑on testing according to departmental procedures.
May perform waived to moderate‑complexity testing as approved by the supervisor.
Answers telephones and responds to customer inquiries and requests.
Resolves customer complaints/issues and ensures appropriate documentation.
Communicates test results and descriptions, ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction through professional and courteous communication with internal and external customers.
Reviews and acts on the test pending list.
Troubleshoots and resolves instrument problems with assistance from medical laboratory scientists.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. Additional credit hours in biology and/or chemistry at an accredited institution are preferred.
Experience:

Minimum of two year’s work experience as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant I (CLAI) or equivalent experience in a clinical or hospital setting required.
