Primary Purpose
Implement district health services program to best meet the needs of the student population on the assigned campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health and safety education for students and preventive health practices for students.
Prerequisites
Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program;
Valid Registered Nurse License as per Texas Board of Nurse Examiners;
Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificates.

Major Responsibilities And Duties
Provide direct care using professional comprehensive assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established school health protocols. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
Administer medication to students according to board policy, district procedures, the Texas Department of State and Health Services and the Board of Nursing.
Perform procedures for students according to board policy, district procedures, and the Board of Nursing.
Collaborate with campus principal, school counselor, teachers, parents, food service, and other staff regarding the health needs of the general student population and those students with identified health conditions.
Assess student concerns, communicate with parent/guardian regarding students (via phone or written communication), complete appropriate referrals, and follow up, as needed.
Assess, monitor, and supervise sick and injured students until they can be placed in the care of parent/guardian.
Secure emergency medical care for students as needed. Communicate with parents/guardians or alternate emergency contacts on emergency action taken.
Report communicable diseases to Health Services Coordinator. Ensure appropriate exclusion from school and re-entry into school based on the Department of State and Health Services’ Communicable Disease Chart and guidance from the Cameron County Public Health Department.
Report notifiable conditions to the Health Services Coordinator and Cameron County Public Health Department.
Promote and utilize telehealth platform to facilitate equitable access to care for all students.
Serve as health advocate for students.
Provide information to families on availability of community health resources. Communicate with community health providers or agencies while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse to Child Protective Services in a timely manner, as required by Texas law.
Establish and implement effective procedures to perform mandatory screenings. Complete and follow-up on screening referrals. Submit required vision, hearing, and spinal screening reports to Health Services Coordinator by specified due date. Submit the acanthosis report online through the UTRGV acanthosis website.
Complete all required forms, when necessary. Complete student injury/incident report, when necessary, and submit it to PRIM secretary or designee. Follow-up with parent/guardian regarding the status of student’s injury.
Complete, or assist in the completion (as designed by principal or designee) of employee injury/incident report, when necessary, and notify Risk Management.
Review, evaluate, and maintain accurate immunization data on students. Communicate with parent/guardian regarding immunization requirements. Submit required immunization report to Health Services Coordinator by the specified due date.
Maintain accurate and complete documentation of student care, including but not limited to: medication administration, procedures, notes, screenings, etc. in computerized student information system, as required by district, local and state policies.
Collect, maintain, and scan all patient student health records into the electronic student information system (IHP) annually and as needed. Update IHP when deemed appropriate to reflect changes in the student’s healthcare needs and address nursing interventions and/or student healthcare outcomes.
Attend Health Services meetings and staff development trainings, as scheduled. Attend campus faculty meetings, when requested.
Maintain confidentiality of student information and health records, as required by HIPAA, FERPA, and district policies.
Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment needed for health clinic. Coordinate with campus secretary, Health Services Coordinator, or designee, to order supplies throughout the school year.
Report potential health and safety hazards and concerns to campus principal or available campus administrator.
Travel to other campuses to provide nursing assistance, when necessary. Accompany student with health conditions on field trips, as deemed necessary.
Coordinate and assist in the implementation of health-related programs on assigned campus. Maintain designated binder to use as reference for buddy nurse and/or health aide.
Provide health-related campus trainings to students and/or staff, as needed. Complete required annual trainings as directed by Human Resources and the Health Services Coordinator.
Provide hands-on training to staff members who have been selected as UDCAs and medication administrators on an annual basis and as needed.
Demonstrate competency with computer skills and programs utilized in Health Services Dept. (e.g., Skyward, ImmuTrac, etc).
Assist with health aide interviews, as requested. Assist with training of newly hired nurses and health aides.
Provide guidance to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs) or other school staff on health-related tasks. Assist with vaccine clinics, as necessary. Assist with the planning of campus health fair, as requested.
Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meeting of students with identifiable health needs. Collaborate with appropriate staff regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) item.
Maintain communication (verbal or written) with Health Services Coordinator regarding student health status or other health services concerns.
Practice nursing within the scope of registered nursing and maintain professional nursing skills and knowledge as required by the Texas Nurse Practice Act and the Texas Board of Nursing.
Maintain active Registered Nurse license, as verified by the Texas Board of Nursing.
Maintain active certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR).
Maintain active certifications for vision, hearing, spinal, acanthosis and spot vision screening.
Report to work at times assigned by campus principal and/or Health Services Coordinator. Take lunch breaks as required. Additional hours may not be worked unless pre-approved by campus principal and/or Health Services Coordinator. If comp time is earned (with approval only), it must be used by the date specified by the Payroll Department. Submit time off requests in a timely manner.
Comply with all regulations, routines, and policies at the state, district, departmental, and campus levels.
Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, and the Texas Department of State and Health Services.
Perform other duties as assigned.
