Overview
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Heavy Mechanic in Gillette, Wyoming. In this hands-on role, you will diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of equipment and vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engines, brake systems, transmissions, hydraulic components, and perform preventative maintenance. Documentation of service and repair work is required. A valid driver’s license is required; CDL and formal technical training are preferred.
Essential Functions
Conduct preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel and automotive equipment and other self-propelled or towed equipment.
Perform safety inspections on diesel and automotive equipment.
Read and interpret technical manuals to diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment.
Rig and fabricate new equipment to district standards.
Create repair orders and manage inventory of shop, equipment, and supplies.
Design and fabricate parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
Knowledge
Knowledge of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair methods and techniques.
Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and parts (hydraulics, drive trains, gas and diesel engine overhauls).
Knowledge of grease and oil specifications and general servicing of equipment.
Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience in Heavy Mechanics. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL.
OR
Education: Associate's Degree. Experience: 0-2 years of progressive work experience in Heavy Mechanics. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL.
Physical Working Conditions
Availability for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with reporting to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of the call.
Subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools; daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment; occasional exposure to hazardous materials.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; ability to stand or sit and operate equipment for long periods; work in adverse environmental conditions; work around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
