This position will be responsible for the resolution of moderate complexity and moderate exposure Workers Compensation claims in multiple jurisdictions. The position will have increased responsibility for decision making within their authority and work under general direction from their manager.

Responsibilities

Analyze coverage and communicate coverage positions

Conduct, coordinate, and direct investigation into loss facts and extent of damages

Confirm coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claims

Draft coverage position letters

Evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured’s exposure

Handle claims in all jurisdictions

Handle litigated and non-litigated property damage claims with values up to $250,000

Handle non-litigated bodily injury claims with values up to $250,000 in all jurisdictions

Handle smaller product liability and/or construction defect claims

Identify losses which should be reported to SIU

Participate in special projects or assist other team members as requested

Provide excellent and professional customer service to insureds while maintaining a high level of production

Represent Markel in mediations, as required

Set reserves within authority or make recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license

Successful completion of basic insurance courses or achievement of industry designation (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU)

Minimum of 2–3 years experience in commercial construction or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge of insurance industry or claims handling preferred

Pay and Benefits
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, job‑relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Claims Examiner II is $62,400–$85,800 with 12% incentive.

Markel offers hybrid working schedules of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.
