
Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic

Overview
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Allegheny County Maintenance Organization, is seeking skilled and motivated individuals to join our team as Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics. This critical role helps keep our highways and bridges safe by ensuring the reliability of the equipment that supports daily maintenance and emergency operations.
Description of Work
In this role, you will perform a wide range of mechanical and analytical tasks to keep a diverse fleet of construction equipment, trucks, and gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles operating safely and efficiently. You will service multiple systems, carry out preventative maintenance, complete repairs, and ensure all work is documented accurately. Success in this position requires strong diagnostic skills, sound mechanical judgment, and a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment for yourself, your team, and equipment operators.
Key Responsibilities
Performing preventative maintenance and repairs on construction equipment, trucks, and gasoline/diesel vehicles
Servicing hydraulic, electrical, heating, cooling, and exhaust systems
Working on both manual and automatic transmissions
Conducting state vehicle inspections for all applicable equipment
Completing accurate work orders and documenting time spent on each task
Reporting equipment incidents, malfunctions, or damage promptly
Identifying proper repair procedures for heavy machinery and making necessary mechanical adjustments
Maintaining a safe work environment and following all safety protocols
Work Schedule and Additional Information
Full-time employment
Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
Travel, overtime, and shift work are required. Work hours are subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position
Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492.00 (before taxes)

Qualifications
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements
This position requires possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License and any endorsements necessary to operate specific vehicles or equipment.
This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
