Trainee Status

at $17.19 per hour. Trainee status holders must meet the minimum education/experience qualifications within one year of hire.

SUMMARY
Performs skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.

QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school.

Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL‑A) with appropriate tank endorsement.

Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meets Department of Transportation minimum standards.

Employment in the state requires a Commercial Driver’s License medical card, unless already employed by the State of New Hampshire.

Negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with federal regulations.

Ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis.

Possession of a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in the operation of motorized highway equipment.

Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B (CDL‑B) with ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL‑A) with appropriate endorsements within one year of hire.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance/construction equipment and vehicle components used in constructing and maintaining the State Highway System, including snow and ice removal, flood mitigation, and seasonal road surface treatments.

Maintain assigned equipment and perform necessary field adjustments, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting to keep equipment serviceable.

Observe winter storm road conditions and independently determine appropriate action for plowing and applying abrasives or chemicals, while providing training and supervision to entry‑level personnel.

Supervise, train and review the work of small crews, entry‑level workers, and contractors to ensure safety and environmental practices align with Department policy.

Respond immediately to winter maintenance or traffic emergency activities on a 24‑hour/day basis throughout the year.

Perform routine highway and road maintenance activities under adverse conditions, including exposure to high‑speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and disaster situations.

Traverse varying terrain and perform tasks that involve heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building and equipment maintenance/repair.
