Highway Maintainer III (District 2)

Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Maintenance, District 2

Pay: $17.81–$23.39 per hour, $17.19 per hour for Trainee Status (requires obtaining a CDLA within one year of hire)

Job Summary
Performs skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. Supervises entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.

Minimum Qualifications

Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after high school.

Valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A (CDL‑A) with appropriate tank endorsement.

MVR must meet the minimum standards set by the Department of Transportation.

Conditional employment: must obtain a Commercial Driver's License medical card unless currently employed by the State of New Hampshire.

Negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen in accordance with federal regulations and US DOT requirements.

Ability to lift/carry material weighing up to 50 lbs on an intermittent basis.

Possession of a telephone or acceptable means of communication and be available 24 hours per day.

Trainee Option
Candidates with a valid CDL‑B and the ability to obtain a CDL‑A with appropriate endorsements within one year of hire, who otherwise meet the minimum requirements, may be considered and hired in trainee status.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the operation of motorized highway equipment.

Responsibilities

Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance/construction equipment, machinery, and vehicle components used in the construction and maintenance of the State Highway System, including snow and ice removal, flood mitigation, and road surface seasonal treatment operations.

Maintain assigned equipment and perform field adjustments, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting to maintain serviceability and optimal operations.

Observe winter storm road conditions and independently determine appropriate action for plowing and spreading abrasives or chemicals.

Provide training and supervision to entry‑level personnel assisting in road condition efforts.

Supervise, train, and review the work of small crews, entry‑level workers, and contractors to ensure safety and environmental practices are met.

Work with the immediate supervisor to address personnel issues and recommend improvements in equipment and operations.

Perform routine highway and road maintenance activities under adverse conditions with exposure to high‑speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and disaster situations.

Traverse varying terrain and perform tasks involving heavy physical labor, such as drainage construction and equipment maintenance/repair, lifting or carrying material up to 50 lbs regularly.

Respond immediately for winter maintenance and/or traffic emergency activities on a 24‑hour basis throughout the year.
