Kutztown Foundry and Machine is looking for a Furnace Operator. In this position, you will be responsible for operating and monitoring furnaces used in the melting and heating of Steel. This position requires a keen understanding of furnace operations, temperature control, safety protocols, and the ability to maintain consistent production quality while minimizing risks and ensuring efficient furnace operation.
Location: Kutztown, PA
Shift: Must be able to work any shift
Key Responsibilities:
Operating and monitoring industrial furnaces used for melting or heating metals, ensuring proper temperature, pressure, and atmosphere are maintained
Loading and unloading materials, such as metal scrap, alloys, and fluxes, into the furnace as per the specifications for each production batch
Adjusting furnace settings to meet the required metal properties, ensuring optimal melting
Conducting visual inspections of the furnace and surrounding areas to identify and address any safety concerns, wear, or damage to equipment
Monitoring temperature and material levels inside the furnace using digital controls and manual readings, adjusting as necessary to maintain consistent quality
Recording furnace operating conditions, including temperature logs, material inputs, and any abnormalities, to ensure traceability and compliance with quality standards
Partnering with other operators, metallurgists, and maintenance teams to ensure smooth furnace operation and troubleshoot any issues that arise
Performing routine maintenance on furnace equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and checking for wear or damage
Assisting in the handling and disposal of byproducts, including slag and other waste materials, ensuring they are properly processed and disposed of according to safety and environmental regulations
Ensuring proper operation of safety systems, including alarms, emergency shutdown protocols, and temperature monitoring devices, to minimize risks and prevent accidents
Maintaining a clean and organized work area to meet safety and environmental standards
Required Skills and Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (technical certifications or training in metallurgy, manufacturing, or industrial operations is a plus)
Previous experience as a furnace operator or in a similar industrial setting is highly preferred
Strong understanding of metal melting, heat treatment processes, and temperature control systems
Knowledge of furnace operation, including adjusting temperature, pressure, and atmosphere settings to optimize metal properties
Familiarity with safety regulations in high-temperature environments and the ability to follow safety protocols and emergency procedures
Ability to read and interpret technical data, including temperature logs and equipment manuals
Good mechanical aptitude, with the ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of furnace equipment
Strong attention to detail, with the ability to monitor and adjust furnace conditions to meet production requirements
Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Certification in furnace operation, metal processing, or industrial maintenance
Experience in operating different types of furnaces (e.g., electric arc, induction, or blast furnace)
Basic knowledge of computer systems for furnace controls and monitoring
Working Conditions:
Work environment includes plant, warehouse, production and non-production areas and plant grounds
This position may require work/maintenance coverage beyond the normal hours, shift, and on weekends/holidays
Ability to tolerate both high and low temperatures, loud noises typical of a manufacturing plant
Safety Activities:
Be aware of and observe all safety practices. Including but not limited to- Safety glasses, safety boots, hearing protection, etc as required
Know and follow all safety rules and procedures
Participate in safety committees and initiatives as assigned
