Operations Supervisor
This position is responsible for organizing and scheduling staff and directing the day-to-day operations of all rail, yard, and trucking functions. This position is responsible for ensuring loading of vehicles onto rail cars and car haul trucks, as well as receipt/movement/storage of vehicles through efficient productivity of the work crews. This position coordinates the activities of associates under the direction of the Terminal Manager to ensure a well-coordinated, productive, efficient operation.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Responsible for the daily scheduling of personnel to complete receipt/movement/storage, rail loading, pre-delivery inspections, and trucking operations in a productive cost-efficient manner.
Direct the day-to-day activities of the operation
Oversee vehicle receipt/movement/storage
Oversee trucking operation
Oversee pre-delivery inspections
Oversee rail loading operations
Assign personnel to job locations
Ensure personnel have the support, tools, and supplies needed for production. This includes purchasing and inventory of consumable materials when applicable
Conduct audits and make suggestions for corrective action as needed
Documents performance issues and coordinates all correction action with Terminal, Operations and HR Managers
Observe and assist where needed
Make appropriate changes to activities if needed
Ensure all Company policies and procedures are followed
Daily communication with leads, other staff, and office personnel to determine staffing, supply and operational needs, and ensure these needs are met.
Responsible for ensuring new personnel receive the appropriate training
Report accidents and injuries on appropriate forms and communicates the procedure to all appropriate customers/vendors and Company personnel
Conducts accident investigations
Responsible for safety programs to provide a safe, clean workplace for all personnel and within the regulations of local, state, federal, and regulatory standards
Conducts time studies and man-minute reports and evaluates associates according to standards
May assist in the facility budget process
May interface with the Customer to ensure customer satisfaction; will generally defer most issues to Operations/Account Manager or Terminal Manager
Conducts labor/materials cost analysis and coordinates rates with Terminal Manager.
Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned
Assists in equipment, facility, and Company vehicle maintenance
May assist with property maintenance issues
May perform other duties from time to time at the direction of the Terminal, District, or Regional Manager.
Minimum Requirements
Ability to communicate with and deal effectively with customers, associates, and the public
Ability to function effectively under pressure
Knowledge and general ability to apply an understanding of invoicing/billing process, including an ability to perform routine business mathematics and understand accounts payable/receivable
Ability to perform a variety of functions which requires considerable exercise of independent judgment
Ability to work with a diverse group of people
Ability to produce accurate reports and information
Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets
Ability to pass driver's safety test at 80% or better
High School Diploma, some college preferred
Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skills with MS Office; including intermediate excel and access skills Internal and customer computer applications a plus; such as AS400/VIPS
Thorough knowledge of operations and office practices, procedures, and equipment
Must possess good written and verbal communication skills
Must be able to work a flexible schedule; with varying hours and days based upon operational needs
Skilled in the proper use of English, including proper spelling and punctuation
Demonstrated ability and experience of supervisory/management principles and practices
Possess good planning, analysis, and organizing skills
Drive vehicles with either an automatic or manual transmission
Valid driver's license; good driving record and the ability to maintain a valid driver's license
