Chief of Staff – Oregon House Democratic Office
We are seeking an experienced legislative professional to serve as the top legislative and political advisor to the House Majority Leader and members of the House Democratic Caucus. The Chief of Staff will provide strategic support, assist in organizing the caucus, oversee policy development and political priorities, manage the House Rules Committee agenda, and supervise the House Democratic Office.
Responsibilities
Act as the chief legislative and political advisor to the House Majority Leader and the House Democratic Caucus.
Provide strategic support and advice for caucus organization and policy development.
Oversee the House Rules Committee agenda.
Manage and supervise House Democratic Office staff and operations.
Coordinate with the House Republican Office, other leadership offices, and Legislative Administration.
Serve as liaison and representative on interim workgroups.
Assist in hiring and expenditure authority for the caucus.
Provide long‑range planning to achieve caucus goals.
Support remote‑work flexibility where appropriate, while maintaining primary in‑person presence at the Oregon State Capitol or Portland offices.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 7–9 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in interpersonal, team, large groups, and public‑speaking contexts.
Strong knowledge of political, policy, communications, and operational elements of caucus management.
Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
Ability to create and implement effective partnerships.
Ability to communicate policies and procedures to multi‑level audiences.
Skill in quickly collecting, analyzing, and conveying information on legislative issues.
Preferred experience managing staff and collaborating with others.
Self‑directed work style and ability to work as part of a team.
Capacity to produce high‑quality work under deadline in a fast‑paced environment.
Willingness to work outside normal business hours as required by legislative sessions.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing demands.
Working Conditions
The position requires long hours, including possible evening and/or weekend work during legislative sessions. Daily use of a computer, keyboard, and monitor is expected. The role may require attendance in person at the Oregon State Capitol or Portland offices, with some flexibility for remote work based on business needs.
