Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School is seeking a dynamic, professional, and mission-driven individual to serve as the Head Varsity Wrestling Coach. This is an opportunity to lead one of the premier programs in the state while continuing a proud tradition of excellence both on and off the mat.
Position Overview
The Head Varsity Wrestling Coach is responsible for leading and developing a highly competitive, faith-centered program that emphasizes excellence in athletics, academics, and character. The ideal candidate is, first and foremost, a strong leader for our young men—someone who establishes high standards, demands accountability, and consistently inspires student-athletes to reach their full potential.
This individual must be capable of making sound decisions both on and off the mat while fostering a disciplined, team-first culture. Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s wrestling program has produced numerous state champions and All-State wrestlers over the past 15 years, and we are seeking a coach who can both sustain and elevate that level of success.
This position is for someone who can build and maintain a strong program while developing individual talent. The coach will foster spiritual growth, promote academic achievement, and guide student-athletes in becoming disciplined, responsible, and faith-filled young men.
Key Responsibilities
Provide leadership, vision, and direction for the entire wrestling program (varsity and sub‑varsity levels)
Develop and implement a comprehensive training program focused on technique, conditioning, and competitive success
Establish and maintain a positive, disciplined, and championship‑level team culture
Serve as a role model of integrity, toughness, sportsmanship, and professionalism
Support and promote the mission and Catholic identity of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School
Foster spiritual development and incorporate faith‑based values into the program
Promote academic success and monitor student‑athlete academic progress
Organize and conduct effective practices, competitions, and off‑season training programs
Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches
Develop long‑term program growth, including youth and feeder program alignment
Build and sustain a structured offseason program, including strength and conditioning, open mats, skill development, and summer training opportunities
Encourage and guide participation in club wrestling while maintaining alignment with school program standards and values
Coordinate and implement a comprehensive weight training program in collaboration with strength and conditioning staff
Plan and lead summer camps, team camps, and individual development opportunities
Establish, grow, and support a middle school wrestling program to ensure long‑term program success
Develop and engage youth wrestling initiatives, including camps, clinics, and community outreach
Communicate effectively with student‑athletes, parents, administration, and staff
Ensure compliance with school, conference, and MHSAA rules and regulations
Manage team operations including scheduling, travel, equipment, uniforms, and budgeting
Promote the program within the school, alumni base, and broader community
Encourage multi‑sport participation and collaborate with other athletic programs
Maintain accurate records, match results, statistics, and program history
Provide a safe, structured, and inclusive environment for all student‑athletes
Qualifications
Previous coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level preferred
Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop student‑athletes
Strong knowledge of wrestling techniques, match strategy, and program development
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Commitment to the values and mission of Catholic education
Proven ability to build, sustain, and elevate a competitive program
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Must meet all MHSAA and school coaching requirements
Availability for practices, competitions, tournaments, and off‑season responsibilities
Preferred Attributes
Experience coaching or competing at a high level in wrestling
Track record of developing individual athletes and team success
Ability to connect with and motivate high school student‑athletes
Strong emphasis on discipline, accountability, and character development
Willingness to be actively involved in the school community
