Summary
The Optometrist position is located in the Eye Service, Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, Albany, NY. This position provides support to the eye clinic and inpatient services.

Duties
The Optometrist is charged with delivering the best possible eye care services to Veteran patients at the Albany-Stratton VA Medical Center. The Optometrist will perform indicated services for conditions in an out‑patient clinical setting, including telemedicine, in accordance with hospital policy and community standards. The Optometrist works within the privileges at all times and is expected to maintain current knowledge and skills, delivering primary eye care throughout the full spectrum of optometry with good diagnostic and therapeutic acumen. The Optometrist provides both outpatient and inpatient vision services to support the Vision clinic.

Responsibilities

Provide vision care to legally blind/visually impaired patients as appropriate.

Prescribe ocular prosthetic devices (spectacles, prisms, and low‑vision aids).

Collaborate with blind rehabilitation specialists and visual impairment services team coordinators on treatment plans.

Provide consultative reports to requesting primary care physicians, staff, and specialists.

Refer patients requiring care outside the scope of optometry practice.

Provide administrative support to the service.

Document notes and encounter forms in a timely manner in accordance with facility policy.

Meet all VA requirements on time, including computer security training, customer service training, and cultural/diversity training.

Demonstrate courtesy, professionalism, and a positive attitude toward Veterans, co‑workers, and the public.

Identify Veteran concerns and apply discernment when resolving issues, facilitating necessary follow‑up.

Enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive information electronically, maintaining confidentiality per HIPAA requirements.

Work proficiently and self‑directed to accomplish all clinical and administrative duties.

Pay and Benefits

Conditions of employment:

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program required for all VA health care personnel.

Accepting this position requires a 2‑year trial period; during this time performance, conduct, and alignment with organizational goals will be evaluated. Upon completion of the trial period, employment will continue only if continued employment advances the public interest.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:

United States citizenship.

Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian school, as approved by the VA.

Full, unrestricted license to practice optometry and current registration in the state of licensure.

Residency training in an accredited post‑graduate program or two years of licensed clinical optometric practice with management of medically complex patients.

Meet physical requirements as outlined by VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Proficiency in spoken and written English as required by U.S. Code.

Additional Information
Annual leave accrual may be accelerated based on prior work or military service experience if requested and approved before appointment date. This credit is not guaranteed.
