Overview
The Senior Principal Engineer – Air Purification & Sanitization will be responsible for advanced research & development in air filtration, indoor air quality (IAQ), sanitization and odor control technologies for residential & commercial applications. Also responsible for developing & executing technology strategies for filter media, sanitization, and other IAQ applications. Responsible to deliver technology roadmaps that are aligned with strategy & result in technology programs that enhance indoor air quality (IAQ).
Responsibilities
Translates understanding of technology to product & manufacturing concepts that are commercially viable and connect benefits to consumer and customer needs.
Conducts research & development in the domain of sanitization & purification: filtration, ventilation, bio-aerosol, virus, VOC, gases, etc.
Conducts technology scoping workshops which result in 3-5+ year technology roadmaps.
Develops technology programs with internal and external resources and partners.
Oversees project planning and execution (identify activities and times to complete).
Develops and implements test plans, conducting or managing testing to validate new technologies.
Performs engineering analysis to select the optimum design.
Documents and reports test results.
Installs and monitors test units.
Provides IAQ technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to AprilAire Engineering and Technology team.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge of controlling indoor air quality (IAQ), filtration of particulates, ventilation, bio-aerosols, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), viruses, gases, etc.
Represents the company in industry organizations including ASHRAE, AHRI, American Filtration and Separation Society & other organizations.
Prepares engineering specifications including physical, operational, reliability, and performance.
Consistently looks for better ways to do things by asking questions and challenging accepted or conventional wisdom.
Qualifications
Advanced understanding of filtration mechanics, bio-aerosol control, ventilation, sanitization and chemistry of odor control, gases etc.
Experience in development and application of filtration media and filter elements, odor removal products, and ventilation products.
Advanced understanding of HVAC system functions, airflow, IAQ and ventilation system, manufacturing of filters & media. Knowledge of manufacturing processes and filter manufacturing technologies.
Good understanding of the application of computer simulation tools and theory of filtration.
Experience with application of various components used in HVAC systems.
Understanding of reliability engineering methodology.
Excellent technical, analytical, and problem solving skills.
Ability to make progress by completing tasks and deliverables in a multi-tasking environment (several concurrent assignments) on time and within budget.
Experienced working effectively in a collaborative team environment; experienced working cross functionally with engineering, marketing, and sales.
Ability to quickly and efficiently understand and organize information necessary to make engineering decisions.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills with the ability to convince others to invest in ideas.
Ability to follow internal engineering design processes and best practices.
Creativity with the tendency to look at things from a unique perspective.
Ability to find patterns and make connections to uncover opportunities. Manufacturing aptitude and ability to commercialize technologies using internal and external partners is preferred but not required.
Able to travel to industry meetings, partners and suppliers.
Social skills and the ability to work at a professional level inside and outside the company.
A minimum of BSME or Chemical Engineering Degree, with 5-10 years of experience in design of air filtration, ventilation, bio-aerosols and odor removal products.
M.S. or Ph.D. and MBA preferred.
