Primary Purpose
Direct and manage the middle school band program, including beginner (6th grade), 7th grade, and 8th grade band, assist with Cotulla High School as assigned, including mariachi when applicable. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth through music education. Oversee all aspects of the middle school band program, including instruction, budgeting, inventory, and performance preparation, while aligning with the overall vision of the district music program.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in Music or related field
Valid Texas teaching certificate in Music EC–12 (required)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Strong knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy across middle school grade levels
Ability to teach beginner through advanced band students
Knowledge of mariachi instruction preferred
Experience with UIL concert and sight-reading preparation
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Ability to manage program logistics including budgeting and inventory
Ability to collaborate with district music staff to ensure program alignment
Experience
Experience directing or assisting a band program, preferably at the middle school level
Experience with UIL competitions and public performances preferred
Responsibilities
Direct and manage all aspects of the middle school band program, including 6th grade beginner band, 7th grade band, and 8th grade band.
Provide high-quality instruction aligned with TEKS and Cotulla ISD curriculum expectations.
Develop and implement lesson plans and maintain accurate student grades in accordance with district policy.
Prepare students for performances, UIL contests, and other musical events.
Recruit, retain, and support student participation in the band program.
Manage the band program budget in coordination with campus administration and the Director of Bands.
Maintain accurate inventory of instruments, equipment, and uniforms.
Oversee instrument care, maintenance, and repair processes.
Organize and coordinate performances, rehearsals, contests, and travel arrangements.
Ensure proper supervision and safety of students during all band-related activities.
Work collaboratively with the Music Director to align middle school and high school program goals and expectations.
Support vertical alignment of instruction to ensure student readiness for high school band.
Collaborate with campus administration and fine arts staff to support campus and district initiatives.
Assist with district music events and support high school band program needs as assigned.
Attend required professional development, staff meetings, and PLCs.
Maintain professional communication with students, parents, and staff.
Follow all district policies, procedures, and timelines.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Bands, campus principal, or designee.
Attendance is a necessary job function.
Working Conditions
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions; manage multiple program responsibilities and deadlines.
