Primary Purpose:
Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs including behavior management, crisis intervention, and instructional programs. Works under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to work with children with disabilities
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Ability to communicate effectively
Required participation in district provided crisis intervention training
Required participation in district provided behavior management training
Experience:
Some experience working with children
Some experience in implementing instructional strategies and behavior intervention plans
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Assist teacher in maintaining a safe, secure learning environment.
Assist teacher in implementation of behavior intervention plan and IEP goals.
Help manage behavior of students: intervene in crisis situations and restrain disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Maintain confidentiality.
Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Demonstrate the ability to remain calm and withstand pressures.
Demonstrate flexibility to change in routine and adapt quickly to changing situations.

Copier, personal computer, audiovisual equipment, laptop, printer, copier, fax machine, calculator, telephone, electronic mobile devices, projector, and video display monitor.

Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress; noise level is usually moderate. Assist ambulatory students; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment; frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. May occasionally be exposed to biohazardous waste, bacteria and communicable diseases. Predictable and regular attendance expected.
