Summary Job Description for Ellsworth Air Force Base Protestant Contemporary Service Music Director:

Title:

The position is for a Music Director for the Protestant Worship Service at Ellsworth Air Force Base (AFB).

Scope of Responsibilities:

The Music Director will manage and provide music activities for the Protestant community, including playing, training, scheduling, and processing music for liturgies. Responsibilities include rehearsals, services, special services (e.g., memorials, funerals, holidays), and collaboration with the Wing Chaplain.

Education and Experience:

The Music Director must have at least 4 years of college in music or equivalent experience in a church/chapel setting. They must be able to sing, lead worship, plan and organize a praise team, sight‑read, arrange, and score music, and maintain positive relationships with volunteers.

General Responsibilities:

Duties include assembling a praise team, leading rehearsals and services, coordinating with the Chaplain, providing opening remarks and prayers, ensuring copyright compliance, and arranging replacements for absences. They must also return government‑owned music and equipment after contract termination.

Specific Responsibilities:

The Music Director must arrive early for rehearsals and services, recruit volunteers, manage facilities used for music events, maintain professional appearance, provide audio/visual lyrics, and attend music program‑related meetings.

Criminal History Background Check:

The Music Director and volunteers working with children under 18 must undergo background checks. Disqualifying information can lead to contract termination. Provisional performance is allowed under supervision until the background check is favorably adjudicated.

Duty Hours:

The Music Director is required to attend all rehearsals, services, and special events, with an estimated 112 events annually (56 rehearsals and 56 services). Replacements for absences must meet qualifications and be approved by the Chaplain.

Other:

The Music Director may need to attend Chaplain Corps conferences or training. They are responsible for taxes, licenses, and compliance with laws. Government‑owned instruments and equipment will be provided but must be properly cared for.

Compliance with Public Law:

The Music Director must not perform inherently governmental functions and must adhere to confidentiality requirements under the Privacy Act of 1974.

Government Down‑time:

In case of base closures, the Music Director will follow official notifications and instructions. Work may continue if needed and supervised, or the contract may be extended for the duration of the closure.
