is seeking a

Medical Assistant

to join our

Ambulatory Surgery Center

team. The Medical Assistant will work in the pain department under the direction of the physician and nursing supervisor, assisting patients during elective interventional pain management procedures.

NWOS is closed on all weekends and major holidays. No night shifts or on‑call duties.

Essential Functions

Adhere to all 19 NWOS Fundamentals.

Room patients, record vital signs, update medications, verify allergies and reaction lists, and update/verify pharmacy information.

Prepare charts the day before or morning of clinic, including gathering ER notes, operative notes, office notes from other providers, reviewing current charts, determining required x‑rays, and reading provider’s previous notes.

Admit patients by interviewing and documenting current medications, screenings, and medical history questions for RN and MD review.

Open and prepare exam rooms, stock supplies as needed, and clean rooms between patients when required.

Provide pre‑procedural education per provider’s protocol and record it in the EHR for the patient.

Perform fundamental and clinical procedures of a Medical Assistant‑Registered (MA‑R) or Medical Assistant‑Certified (MA‑C) as outlined by Washington State legislation. These duties are delegated and supervised by a healthcare practitioner.
Blood glucose, INR, pregnancy tests

EKG

IV removal

Preparation for sterile procedures

Disposal of biohazardous material

Assist MD in interventional pain procedures.

Participate in procedural timeouts as required.

Document non‑sedation procedures in the EMR.

Order tests—X‑rays, CT, US, MRI, lab draws, and physical therapy referrals as requested by the provider.

Call patients with test results based on written or verbal instructions from the provider.

Provide discharge instructions and/or specific education related to pain diaries based on the procedure type.

Transport patients via stretcher or wheelchair within the facility or parking structure safely with proper body mechanics.

Follow guidelines for universal precautions and isolation procedures.

Maintain 90% accuracy in EHR charting.

Collaborate with other staff to ensure clinical compliance with all mandated patient safety regulations.

Maintain a safe and clean working environment consistent with OSHA, HIPAA, and NWOS standards. Recognize and act on potentially unsafe acts, and assist with codes, fire drills, and emergency situations.

Demonstrate positive interpersonal relations when dealing with providers, patients, families, visitors, co‑workers, executive staff, and other NWOS employees in a professional and confidential manner.

Show initiative, seek additional responsibilities, and work through challenges while adapting to unexpected changes.

Follow commitments, meet time requirements, respond quickly to requests, maintain satisfactory attendance, and be punctual and prepared to work when scheduled.

Respect the feelings of others and remain polite on the job.

Keep supervisor informed of problems or issues.

Maintain strict patient confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA regulations.

Conduct oneself in accordance with the NWOS employee handbook and policies and procedures.

Complete all required NWOS trainings as assigned.

Qualifications
Required

High school diploma or GED.

Current Medical Assistant Certification in Washington State or Medical Assistant Registration. Employee pays for application and renewal fees, reimbursed by NWOS.

Valid BLS certification.

Preferred

One to two years of experience in a similar role, preferably in interventional pain management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge and ability to operate modern office equipment and software.

Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy, specifically orthopedics.

Knowledge of safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment.

Willingness to learn unfamiliar tasks and equipment operations.

Strong organizational and critical‑thinking skills and the ability to multitask.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The Medical Assistant position holds no supervisory responsibilities.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an ASC environment with constant and interrupted interaction with staff and patients. Tasks require long periods of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and stretching, and potential exposure to bodily fluids and sharps. The role requires lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, hand‑eye coordination, normal visual acuity, and hearing. Work may occur in emergency or stressful situations with sick, irritable, upset, or confused patients. Flexibility with work time and an ability to work in a fast‑paced environment are essential.
