Position Summary
The special education teacher is responsible for planning and delivering instruction and/or modifying the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences. The position includes developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators to address instructional and classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

Essential Functions

Instruct individuals and groups in special education skill areas.

Teach district-approved curriculum, plan lessons, special education programs and teaching methods.

Monitor students’ progress in and outside the special education room.

Prepare for classes assigned.

Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintains contact with parents of students.

Evaluates student progress based on work output and observation, determines goals, objectives, and directions.

Assists in screening, evaluating, and recommending placement of referrals in the special education program.

Instruct and assist students with multiple disabilities.

Adapt classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans.

Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with physical limitations of the location and needs of students.

Guide the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for lessons, units, projects, and the like.

Assist administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct; develop reasonable classroom behavior rules and maintain order fairly.

Assess student accomplishments regularly and provide progress reports.

Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth; maintain records; prepare progress reports.

Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.

Administer subject-specific assessments to evaluate competence.

Advise parents and guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and improvement methods.

Analyze test data to enhance student achievement and instruction.

Assess progress toward objectives and provide feedback to students, parents, administration, and district specialists.

Collaborate with professional learning communities, instructional staff, parents, business partners, and community resources to improve student outcomes.

Guide students to improve performance, health status, and problem-solving techniques.

Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and subject-specific assignments.

Differentiates classroom work for individualized learning.

Direct paraprofessionals, volunteers, and student workers to support an effective program.

Facilitate student learning through planned activities, technology, field trips, and age-appropriate tasks.

Maintain confidential and non-confidential files and records (grades, test scores, etc.) in line with legal requirements.

Manage student behavior for a safe learning environment.

Prepare written materials (grades, attendance, anecdotal records, lesson plans, progress reports, etc.).

Monitor students in various educational environments (classroom, campus grounds, field trips, clubs, sports, graduation, dances).

Participate in building and district teams (PLC, staff, SAP, department, etc.) to contribute to student success.

Report incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse, etc.) to ensure safety and adhere to policy.

Respond to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.

Be available to students, parents, school, and district for education-related purposes outside instructional day.

Respond to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators, etc. to resolve issues and provide information.

Other Functions

Participate in meetings to convey or gather necessary information.

Perform related duties assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises students and paraprofessionals.

Qualification Requirements
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree

required and a valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in Special Education and content area.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or regulations; write reports, correspondence, and manuals; present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the public.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to use probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical situations.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule forms.

Other Skills and Abilities
Apply research to instruction; plan and implement lessons aligned with program and school objectives; establish and maintain relationships with students, peers and parents; strong verbal and written communication.

Physical Demands
Regularly required to stand, talk or hear; walk frequently; occasionally push or move up to fifty pounds such as a TV/VCR cart; require close vision and focus adjustment.

Work Environment
