Systems Engineer

Virginia Peninsula Community College seeks a Systems Engineer to manage and maintain the campus technology infrastructure. The role provides day‑to‑day support for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Defender XDR, SharePoint, Intune, Configuration Manager, Windows Server 2022, VMware, and related services. The Systems Engineer is responsible for ensuring system reliability, security compliance, and incident response across campus locations.
Key Responsibilities
Administer Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
Implement and maintain Microsoft Defender XDR and other security measures.
Deploy and manage Intune and Configuration Manager for device and application management.
Install, configure, and support Windows Server 2022 environments.
Manage VMware virtual environments, performance, and resource utilization.
Continuously monitor security systems and respond to incidents using Microsoft Sentinel or equivalent tools.
Provide exceptional customer support, troubleshooting hardware and software issues.
Maintain the lifecycle of digital certificates and relevant documentation.
Qualifications and Experience
Substantial experience and training in Information Technology.
In‑depth knowledge of Microsoft 365, Defender XDR, SharePoint, Intune, Configuration Manager, Windows Server 2022, VMware, PowerShell, cybersecurity compliance, and security monitoring.
Experience with network infrastructure, routers, switches, wireless, firewalls, and IDS/IPS on a campus‑wide scale.
Valid driver’s license with the ability to work at all campus locations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, detail‑oriented, and excellent customer‑service orientation.
Ability to solve problems efficiently, manage timelines, prioritize tasks, and work both independently and collaboratively.
Flexible schedule, including telework, evenings, and weekends, with the requirement to arrive on site within two hours for emergencies.
Additional Considerations
Experience with Juniper or Mist network equipment.
Knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections Security Standards (VCCS) and state security policies.
Operation of a state vehicle (required).
