Supervises:
May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose:
To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Major Function: Management of Instructional Time
The teacher prepares materials, supplies, and equipment before each lesson; starts the class quickly; keeps students on task; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
Major Function: Management of Student Behavior
The teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, and student movement; monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, and seat work activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, maintaining student dignity.
Major Function: Instructional Presentation
The teacher reviews prior material, introduces the lesson and objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in an understandable manner, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, conducts the lesson at a brisk pace, makes efficient transitions, and summarizes main points.
Major Function: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
The teacher sets clear work standards, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly, one at a time.
Major Function: Instructional Feedback
The teacher provides feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, probes or gives clues for incorrect or absent responses, and encourages growth.
Major Function: Facilitating Instruction
The teacher develops an instructional plan aligned with school and system objectives, uses diagnostic information to revise objectives and tasks, records student performance, matches objectives with assessment and student needs, and uses available resources to support the program.
Major Function: Interacting Within the Educational Environment
The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably, and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
Major Function: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to policies and regulations, and demonstrates professional growth.
Additional Job Functions:
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or a related field that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Physical Requirements:
Ability to use various equipment and tools, lift and move objects with negligible force, and perform light work.
Data Conception:
Ability to analyze data and make judgments.
Interpersonal Communication:
Ability to convey information and follow instructions.
Language Ability:
Ability to read correspondence, prepare reports, and use prescribed formats.
Intelligence:
Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to solve problems and interpret instructions.
Verbal Aptitude:
