Job Description
The Secondary School Teacher helps educate, challenge, and inspire all learners to become contributing, responsible members of a global society. This may be teaching any level between 6th - 12th grade.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaches Social Studies (including, but not limited to History, Economics, Geography, Government) to pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials.
Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
Establishes and maintains a standard of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school program.
Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems.
Creates an effective environment for learning.
Maintains professional competence through staff development activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
Supervises pupils in and out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.

Education and/or Experience
BA/BS degree from a college or university in Education, Social Studies or related field
Valid Michigan Secondary Teaching Certificate with RX or CC endorsement OR willingness to obtain Teaching Certification
Preferred
Additional training and/or education
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret communication including emails, letters, spreadsheets, and forms. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the community, regulatory agencies or staff members.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate basic mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages and decimals; spatial aptitude to inspect length and weight of objects.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Physical Demands
Position requires sustained periods of sitting and working on computer and office equipment.
Position requires standing and walking throughout buildings.
Position involves frequent lifting up to 20 pounds and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds.
Position involves listening, speaking clearly and visual acuity.
Position involves frequent repetitive action on a keyboard.
Work Environment
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to loud depending upon the activity in a particular part of the day.
