Superintendent Of Construction
This role oversees the complete renovation of a hospital project in Halifax, VA for a multi-year assignment. The superintendent leads field operations for a general contractor, coordinating all on-site activities, managing subcontractors and trade partners, and ensuring the project meets safety, quality, schedule, and budget expectations. The position requires strong communication skills, proven experience in commercial construction, and the ability to manage a complex healthcare renovation from start to finish.
Responsibilities
Oversee day-to-day on-site construction activities for a complete hospital renovation project from start to completion.
Lead and supervise field operations, including coordination and oversight of all trade partners, subcontractors, and on-site staff.
Help manage and mentor other staff members on the project, promoting a collaborative and accountable team environment.
Coordinate the work of all subcontractors to ensure alignment with project plans, specifications, and schedule requirements.
Monitor project progress, proactively identify issues or delays, and implement solutions to keep the project on schedule.
Ensure strict adherence to safety standards and OSHA requirements on the jobsite at all times.
Review, interpret, and implement technical specifications, architectural drawings, and construction documents in the field.
Collaborate closely with project management, design teams, and trade partners to resolve constructability issues and field conflicts.
Utilize scheduling software to support the development, updating, and communication of project schedules.
Use Microsoft Office, BlueBeam, and other construction technology tools to track project documentation, reports, and correspondence.
Maintain high standards of quality control, ensuring work meets or exceeds project specifications and industry standards.
Communicate clearly and professionally with owners, design professionals, subcontractors, and internal team members, both verbally and in writing.
Actively participate in project meetings and contribute to a positive, team-oriented work culture.
Support the successful delivery of projects in the $5M+ range, with a focus on safety, quality, and client satisfaction.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5+ years of experience as a superintendent for a general contractor.
At least 2+ years of experience as an assistant superintendent with a general contractor.
Proven experience managing ground-up and complete build projects with a general contractor.
Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple trade partners and subcontractors on complex projects.
Strong verbal and written communication skills with excellent listening abilities.
Ability to read, understand, and apply technical specifications and architectural drawings in the field.
OSHA training required; OSHA 30 certification strongly preferred.
Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
Proficiency with BlueBeam for reviewing and managing construction documents.
Experience using scheduling software such as MS Project, Primavera, or Phoenix.
Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) in a construction environment.
Proven track record working on projects valued at $5M or higher.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Healthcare construction experience, particularly in hospital projects, is a strong plus.
Experience with renovation projects and occupied or sensitive environments is beneficial.
Demonstrated ability to work as an active participant in a team environment.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing field documentation and activities.
Comfort working with technology packages and construction-related software tools.

Work Environment
This is an on-site role based at a hospital renovation project in Halifax, VA. The standard work schedule runs Monday through Friday, approximately 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with conditions that may vary depending on construction activities and project phase. The superintendent works in an active construction environment, regularly interacting with trade partners, subcontractors, and internal team members.
